"I'M NOT AVAILABLE FOR THAT"

"I'M NOT AVAILABLE FOR THAT"

How available are you for shit that doesn't light you up?

I'm going to call it and say your schedule and business is probably littered with this shit. And all because we're taught to design businesses from a place of ‘should’ and not ‘standard’. Some idiot was like "this is good business" when it's just their silly opinion that you're running with as fact.

And we encounter this DAILY and we get tested about it all the time.

When we get tested about our standards, we can also confuse this as "Oh, there’s a market for this" and not actually checking in with ourselves and asking, “But is this actually on brand for me? Is this up to my standards?”?

To give you an example:

When I had my Pilates biz, I didn't work before 8am. Like, the earliest class you could ever book into was 8am. Working in the fitness industry, I should be available for morning classes. Because, fitness.

Did I get 38273 questions asking about morning classes and telling me I should do it because they'd absolutely pay me? Absolutely.

Did I do it? Nope.

Did it piss people off? Tremendously!

But did they get over it and come to a night time class instead? Yep.

Were we still booked out three months in advance? Yeeeppppppp!

My standard was sleep and turning up to work when the sunlight was out. And I really couldn't give two hoots if people wanted it because ultimately, my desire to start a business came back to doing shit on my terms not what other people wanted from me.

So many of betray ourselves each day in our business from doing things from a place of ‘should’ and not ‘standard’.

Partly because:

?? We don't know our standards

?? We worry about the ramifications of upholding our standards

?? We could be overwhelmed seeing how much in our life and biz has been designed from ‘should’ and how much self-betrayal happens daily

?? It's fuqing terrifying to make this change.

So how do we do this change? How do we identify what our standards actually are?

→ You can start by checking in at the end of each day. How do you feel?

→ You can look at the clients you have and the projects you're doing. How are you feeling?

→ You can look at what's in your calendar the coming week. How do you feel?

→ You can look at the upcoming projects. How do you feel?

The above will give you a great start on what needs to shift and some new boundaries and standards you need to add into your business and your personal life.

Want some examples? Browse mine:

Here are my standards:

  • That I'm not someone's parent — remembering, following them up
  • Big picture thinking, ALWAYS
  • Running an ethical business that doesn't do shady shit
  • Being dedicated to the work and the vision
  • Effortlessly attracting 'fuq yes' clients
  • Seeing possibility in everyone and everything
  • Not being a desperate bitch and chasing the sale
  • Knowing that I'm not for everyone.

Knowing this, I can get really clear on the micro betrayals that happen for me to focus on so I don't end up resenting my business. This can look like —

  • Following people up when they’re not respecting my time because ‘it’s good business’
  • Not honouring a price I want to charge
  • Helping a client co-write a story on why they can’t do something that they’ve never even attempted
  • Not sending someone an application or a payment link when they hit me up with questions even though I know deep down it’s disrespectful to my paid clients
  • Not saying what’s hot on my heart because I’m worried I’ll upset people and people won’t want to work with me
  • Subscribing to the belief that people will come to for free but not want to work with me
  • Bending boundaries to be nice
  • Not having conversations to keep the peace.

Once you can see where you're having these micro self-betrayals (dramatic, but let's go with it) the hardest part is upholding the standard because you WILL be tested.

You will have things test you and you'll want to back down — like a dream client with no budget. Say yes to this shit and you'll end up with a business you hate.

Say no and honour yourself and you'll end up with a business where everyone is like, "how the hell have they built a business without dealing with AB or C?! I'm so jealous"

Your boundaries and standards build the business you have now.

And if you want a HOT business and a hotter future, what will decide that is how high your standards are today.
