Illusion... and the world of dreams

Dearly beloved,

Funnily enough, just as I was thinking about this, a photographer friend on Facebook started talking about the possibilities and challenges that Artificial Intelligence (AI) brings with it in photography. Although she had a really good point about how young people especially need to be aware of photo manipulation, it reminded me that this is nothing new - I mean we all know that most celebrity photos are the result of teams of people working with make up, hair, lighting, camera angles, maybe creating backgrounds that are just as unreal and then, of course, post production and even retouching.?

Kate Winslet became renowned in 2003 for speaking out about a heavily retouched cover of GQ, later in her career she was able to sign a contract with a beauty company with the clause that they would not digitally alter photos of her. Even recently, she had to send back two versions of the poster for a project because they kept taking the lines around her eyes away.

Anyway, my next class on dreams is going to be all about illusion. Dreams are wonderful but the amazing thing about real dreams is that, once they come true, there's a magic in the "fine lines", in even what we might sometimes think of as imperfections.

Probably also a good time to remember this as we see the massive launch of the movie of the plastic fantastic "Barbie" (and, of course, the equally smooth Ken backing her up). I love the way that dolls have changed and I'll never forget seeing the video of a little girl opening up the gift of a doll who, like her, had a prosthetic leg. That's life-changing for kids who feel like they're not included, not represented and I've loved seeing flashback photos on social media of other dolls like that and the difference they've made.

But, if we think about it, all films are illusions, all are tricks of the light - just as my Zoom class is never the same as being in a real live class. On the upside though, we're all so much closer to getting in our own showers at the end of class and that's a real plus!

Lots of love,?

Pearl
