Illusion of Reality
Welcome to INVERA. This blog explores the illusion of reality and what it means for our understanding of the world. So join me on this journey as we unravel the mystery of the illusion of reality and challenge our assumptions about the world we live in. But, let’s talk from a different perspective. Do you ever feel like you’re not living the life you want to live? Growing up, I wondered why life always feels like something is missing. Why human wants are never-ending? I’ve always wondered about the reality of our world or the reality of lives in dreams. Are dreams an illusion, or is it reality?
What if I say the things you see, the sounds you hear, the things you touch, or the emotions you feel are all illusions? Shocking?
Yes, this concept of the illusion of reality has been debated for centuries. From the Maya concept of ancient Hinduism to the perceptual theory of modern science, the illusion of reality has been the subject of interdisciplinary research. Maya is a Sanskrit word that means "illusion" or "delusion". It is used in Hindu philosophy to describe the temporary, fleeting, and ever-changing nature of the physical world. According to Hindu philosophy, the universe is seen as a manifestation of the ultimate reality or Brahman. By transcending Maya, one is believed to attain a state of enlightenment or liberation from the cycle of birth and death. Although, science has also given us a better understanding of the possibility that our perception of reality is limited and distorted. The physical earth we experience simply reflects a higher reality beyond our understanding. From a scientific perspective, we understand that the physical world is made up of atoms, molecules, and subatomic particles that can be observed and measured, even at this level, the behavior of these particles can be unpredictable. Furthermore, our perception of the physical world is subjective and limited by our senses, which are influenced by various factors such as cultural background, emotions, and beliefs.
Consider, the phenomenon of optical illusions, where our eyes perceive images that contradict our understanding of the physical world. The best example is the Müller-Lyer illusion, where two lines of the same length appear to be of different lengths due to the arrowheads at either end. This image shows that our view of reality is easily manipulated and distorted.
In the image above, LINE A shows the physical world as we experience and understand it. LINE B, however, shows the real world. People from Line A can be obtained by limiting brackets to get influenced by factors and limiting their views. On the other hand, in line B, the bracket somehow changed his position to think without control. Just because we have removed the social element from our thinking process, the world around us has completely changed. For understanding let’s take an example, humans cannot perceive other types of energy, such as ultraviolet or infrared radiation, which are just as real but beyond our range of perception.
The idea is that our everyday experience of reality is limited by our sensory perception, we perceive the world through a veil of illusions created by our minds. Therefore, we do not experience reality as it is, but only as we perceive it. In the same sense, reality is considered unreal because it is not the ultimate truth. This physical world is only a shadow or reflection of a deeper reality beyond our limited range of perception.
From this perspective, dreams can be seen as glimpses into a deeper reality, where the boundaries between subject and object, self and other, and time and space are blurred or non-existent. In dreams, we experience a more direct and unfiltered connection to this ultimate reality that is impossible in our waking experience.
In conclusion, the illusion of reality does not mean that the physical world is not real, it reminds us to question our assumptions and consider that there is more to the world than we perceive. Ultimately, it can be seen as a call to explore and embrace the mystery and complexity of the world around us, approaching it with curiosity, wonder, and humility.
