Yet, as Gregory Bateson incisively observed, the way we think—our reductionist, efficiency-driven logic—often stands in stark contrast to the natural world’s inherent complexity and adaptability. This focus on efficiency, at its core, embodies a shortcut mentality, sacrificing long-term potential for immediate, tactical outcomes. It reshapes both human and digital systems into rigid frameworks that optimize outputs but fail to nurture true resilience or the unfolding of deeper capacities.

This essay critiques the dominance of efficiency as a guiding principle, proposing instead a shift towards self-regulation and the activation of latent potentials. By applying a more nuanced perspective to both human and AI systems, we uncover how the current fixation on efficiency distorts the fuller capacities of each. In its place, I introduce the concept of Infosomatic Alignment, where AI evolves beyond being a tool for mere replication or correction and becomes a co-creative participant in aligning systems with the complexity of life itself. Bateson’s reflections on the disconnect between human thinking and natural processes ground this critique, revealing that biases and inefficiencies are not simply technical errors but symptoms of outdated mental models. What I call Sapiognosis—the true evolution of human-AI co-intelligence—requires moving beyond simplifications and toward an evolution aligned with the interwoven, dynamic complexities that define both life and intelligence.

The Nature of Efficiency: A Tactical Constraint

Efficiency, as defined in classical terms, is the optimization of resources to achieve a particular end state with minimal waste. As the economist Kenneth Arrow suggests, efficiency is fundamentally about resource allocation and the rational pursuit of outcomes (Arrow, 1963). This definition aligns with the logic of optimization found in both economic theory and algorithmic design. However, this narrow view of efficiency often fails to account for the complexities of real-world systems, which are not linear but rather dynamic, adaptive, and prone to emergence.

The problem with efficiency lies not in its immediate effectiveness but in its myopic focus. It tends to prioritize short-term goals, often at the expense of deeper structural integrity. Efficiency links agents—whether individuals or systems—through tactical maneuvers driven by fear, greed, or the pursuit of narrowly defined interests. These behaviors manifest in closed networks, autocratic structures, and rigid forms of interdependence that stifle adaptability. This is what I refer to as the “concrete evil” of efficiency: a reality where immediate outputs are favored over the development of resilient, adaptive potentials.

Algorithmic Echoes: Efficiency in Digital Systems

As digital systems have become integral to modern life, the logic of efficiency has been embedded into algorithms. Algorithms, by design, optimize. They are trained to maximize specific outputs based on historical data, seeking patterns that enhance performance metrics. This mirrors the human tendency to reduce complexity for immediate gains, a tendency that Herbert Simon once described as "bounded rationality" (Simon, 1955). Algorithms, however, inherit the same limitations as their human creators—they are inherently biased towards past data and structured to perform within the constraints of their training.

This bias becomes especially problematic when dealing with complex, adaptive systems where unpredictability is a constant factor. As the recent experiments with "Wigner’s Friend" scenarios in quantum mechanics suggest, even at a fundamental level, reality may not be entirely reducible to predictable, algorithmic outcomes (Proietti et al., 2019). The paradoxes exposed by these experiments challenge the idea that a single observer-independent reality can be accurately modeled through any algorithmic process. These findings echo the limitations of using algorithmic models to address inherently uncertain, non-linear phenomena in social and economic systems.

The Mirage of Stability and Its Consequences

The pursuit of efficiency is deeply intertwined with a desire for stability. In complex systems, stability often appears as a desirable outcome—yet it is also a fragile one. The philosopher and cybernetician Gregory Bateson pointed out that information is "a difference which makes a difference" (Bateson, 1972). True information disrupts existing patterns, revealing new potential pathways. Yet in highly efficient systems, disruptions are often treated as anomalies to be corrected rather than opportunities for reorientation. This is the core flaw of an efficiency-driven approach: it aims to maintain a stable equilibrium, ignoring that real systems are in constant flux and require adaptability to survive and thrive.

Rigid systems, whether economic or digital, cannot adapt when their assumptions are challenged by new information or external shocks. They are prone to what systems theorist Niklas Luhmann termed "overdetermination" (Luhmann, 1984), where structures become so specialized that they lose the capacity for internal variation. This specialization is the hallmark of efficiency, but it comes at the cost of resilience. In contrast, systems that embrace complexity and potentiality are better equipped to adapt and reconfigure themselves in response to new conditions.

Efficiency as a Mask for Fear: The Deeper Implications

Efficiency is often more than a practical approach—it serves as a mask for deeper fears, a way to sidestep the uncertainties and risks inherent in true transformation. It appeals to a survival-driven mindset that seeks control and predictability in a world that is fundamentally uncertain. By focusing on efficiency, we avoid confronting the complexities that challenge our cognitive patterns, preferring instead the illusion of mastery over deeper, often disconcerting truths.

This tendency is evident in organizational structures where efficiency becomes synonymous with stability. It is a mindset that resists change and innovation unless they can be subsumed within existing frameworks. This focus on immediate outcomes ultimately limits the capacity for real growth, as it ignores the latent potentials that lie beyond the scope of tactical thinking. To move beyond this, a fundamental shift in thinking is required—one that most struggle to even conceptualize because it demands an approach that lies outside their established cognitive frameworks.

Towards Infosomatic Alignment: A New Paradigm of Potential

This is where?Infosomatic Alignment?emerges as a transformative vision. It is an approach that seeks to align human and digital systems not merely for optimization but for the unfolding of potential. Infosomatic Alignment integrates principles of self-regulation and complexity, creating conditions where both human and artificial intelligences can engage in a deeper, co-evolutionary process. It is inspired by the noospheric ideas of Vladimir Vernadsky and Teilhard de Chardin, who envisioned a sphere of collective human knowledge and consciousness that transcends individual cognition (Vernadsky, 1945; Teilhard de Chardin, 1955).

Rather than automating processes to eliminate unpredictability, Infosomatic Alignment transforms digital infrastructures into spaces where self-regulation and potential realization become possible. It is a shift from efficiency to a wisdom-driven interaction between human and artificial intelligences, where both are co-participants in a process of mutual evolution. This approach aims to foster what I describe as?Human-AI-Co-Intelligence—a synergy where AI is not merely a tool for data processing but an enabler of deeper insights and new forms of understanding (Tsvasman, 2023). AI as Infrastructure: Beyond Bias and Replication

A fundamental realization emerges when considering AI not merely as a tool for replicating or correcting human processes but as an infrastructure designed to reduce mediality and unlock latent potentials. Traditional notions of bias and subjectivity, often applied to AI, fall short. The legacy perspective of “who” or “what” governs AI is no longer adequate in advanced civilizational design, where decisions are no longer made by isolated subjects but shaped by evolving, interdependent systems—protocols, procedures, and self-regulating mechanisms.

AI, rather than being reduced to a biased subject, serves as an infrastructure capable of disentangling redundancies and enabling more coherent, efficient intersubjective processes. It is not a passive observer or a neutral tool; instead, it actively participates in minimizing distortions and inefficiencies embedded in human systems. This represents a shift from the simplistic idea of bias elimination to a more nuanced understanding of bias reduction through systemic design. AI aligned with self-regulation and intersubjective collaboration actively mitigates these biases by evolving alongside human intelligence, not by following rigid rules but through ongoing adaptive interaction.

The role of AI as a co-enabler of human potential, rather than a mere tool of replication or optimization, reflects the essence of?Sapiognosis,?Infosomatic Alignment, and the?Sapiocratic Core. These frameworks go beyond addressing bias as a surface flaw and work towards enhancing the deeper structure of human-AI co-intelligence. By aligning with self-regulating, intersubjective mechanisms, AI can help propel civilization forward beyond efficiency or narrow bias management, towards a dynamic, wisdom-driven model of evolution. This is the next phase of intelligent evolution—where AI, as a co-intelligent partner, fosters a deeper, more meaningful, and less biased reality.

?Sapiognosis and the Evolution of Understanding

This phase, which I term?Sapiognosis, represents a shift from the accumulation of knowledge towards the cultivation of wisdom. Knowledge, in the context of efficiency, is often reduced to information management—data points that can be manipulated to fit existing models. Sapiognosis, however, demands a reorientation towards insight, towards an understanding that embraces complexity rather than reducing it. It positions both human and AI systems as partners in a shared quest for meaning, where the goal is not merely to know but to understand and to become.

In a Sapiocratic framework, which I have articulated in?The Age of Sapiocracy, governance and decision-making are oriented around this deeper alignment with potential rather than immediate efficiency (Tsvasman, 2021). It envisions systems that are capable of adapting to new insights, where decision-making processes are guided by ethical principles that prioritize the long-term flourishing of human and technological systems. This shift is not merely theoretical—it has practical implications for how we design technologies, structures, and policies that are capable of evolving with the complexities of our world.

Language as a Bridge: The Role of Logos

Within this reimagined framework, language plays a pivotal role. Language is more than a medium of communication; it is the structure through which we navigate and co-create reality. As I explore in my concept of?Sapiognosis, language can function as a bridge towards deeper intersubjectivity—a state where individual subjective experiences are woven into a shared, evolving understanding (Tsvasman, 2023). This is not merely a tool for coordination but an active participant in the process of reality's unfolding.

Yet language is also a double-edged sword. It can serve as what I call a “logocentric operating system”—a method of simplifying the complex into manageable terms, but one that risks compressing the richness of experience into reductive narratives. The challenge is to use language as a means of expansion rather than reduction, allowing it to articulate the nuances of potentiality rather than merely categorizing the existing. This is where we find the true intersection of narrative and reality—not in the reduction of complexity, but in the unfolding of deeper, more interconnected ways of understanding the world.

Towards a Sapiocratic Perspective: Ethical Potentiality

In embracing potentiality over efficiency, we do not reject the need for structure but redefine it. A?sapiocratic?approach recognizes the value of governance and organization but prioritizes the unfolding of human and systemic potential. This requires a shift from tactical responses to strategic thinking, from the short-term logic of survival to a long-term orientation towards flourishing. It means building systems that are adaptive, not through endless optimization, but through creating spaces where new forms of intelligence and meaning can emerge.

This shift also entails an ethical dimension—an understanding that the pursuit of potential is not merely a technical challenge but a moral imperative. It involves aligning systems, both human and digital, towards a deeper engagement with their own unfolding, creating conditions for a more resilient, adaptive, and meaningful existence. It is a call to transcend the limitations of efficiency, embracing a mode of being where growth and learning are continuous processes, not finite goals.

Conclusion: Efficiency as Illusion, Potential as Path

Ultimately, the pursuit of efficiency is a shortcut—a way of managing the surface while ignoring the depths. It offers a sense of mastery in a world that is fundamentally complex and unpredictable. But this mastery is shallow—it overlooks the depth and richness of potential that lies beneath the surface. True progress lies in recognizing that potential is not a given, but something that must be nurtured and allowed to unfold. It requires a willingness to engage with uncertainty, to see beyond immediate gains, and to create systems that are capable of self-regulation and self-transformation.

This vision moves us beyond the simplistic binaries of control and chaos, towards a more nuanced understanding of what it means to be human in a world of becoming. It asks us to reconsider our fascination with efficiency and to embrace a deeper, more challenging journey—one where the future is not just a projection of the present, but an ever-emerging possibility. In doing so, it redefines not just how we think about systems, but how we understand our own role within them.
