Illuminated by Brilliance

Another year, new thoughts? Perhaps or not depending on you and your context. I know for a fact there are silver linings on clouds - I photographed it! However silver linings remain somewhat intangible and the radiance still requires shadow to be seen but can you feel it instead?

As part of the KTLOLearn crew in keeping the learning on, our opening episode for Season 3 - The Rub & The Radiance, I was reminded of some of my previous writing from many years ago and decided to adapt it here.

"One should never be blinded by brilliance, only illuminated. If you lose your sight then it wasn't brilliant - it was a flash in the pan that burnt and faded!" Simone Moore

As all good stories start, "A long time ago in a land far away…" in my initial foray into broadcasting, I found myself in a crew of ITSM industry colleagues in Oceania, part of a world-wide network of broadcasts with a regional focus. I was downright flabbergasted, spun around the Sun's orbit a few times, and still not quite sure of being anywhere near earth. This crew was made up of people I had watched from afar for a number of years, silently indulging a secret wish that perhaps one day I could Vulcan mind-meld with them and however ineptly, emulate some of their skill and dedication. Even today, other stalwarts across other fields can have the same effect on me.

The podcast grew to have an enormous audience and it's a serious business to ensure that you deliver content that makes a difference to your listeners. After a few years, it ran its course yet, sometime surprisingly, the content remains relevant and the crew are still in touch and have evolved our careers.

A nexus of brilliance

In each crew we become part of, we find our own traditions and rituals and I can use any number of favourite childhood super hero analogies to describe my fellow crew members. The similarities to the various caped and masked crusaders is quite uncanny but shift depending on the topic and guests that appear in each episode. Like all super hero stories, at its heart, the crews have a very strong belief system, passion for what it means to serve and fight the good fight! What’s it like to work with them? Much of the time I still feel like a raw recruit, however they inspire my motivation for continued effort and reinforce what I learn.

When you use the word 'crew' think of this as any team, organisation, group, forum etc in which you engage. The large lesson I learn from my fellows, I feel, is if what you once understood to be correct is proven by experience to be different, then garner your ‘wherewithal’ and make the shift but stand steady yet flexible as the flurry of explosions in others ignites.

The connectedness that now exists allows us to know people through other people we may never have otherwise met. It brings the opportunity to work with them closer to our own orbit and create pathways to discover new brilliance - a growing relationship nexus of many strands. Names, once embodied with mystery are brought into human form, not only heard but seen and touched. They are a real person. Remember, you already have your own brilliance, perhaps it's just coming out of the shadows.

Technology hasn't progressed as far as being able to plug into the matrix and download direct to our brains, but being part of a nexus of brilliance definitely illuminates and sparks the grey matter! It's OK to learn the tricks of these other minds, this isn't cheating but making the most of their knowledge (keeping the learning on!). The results will not be the same as you are not them and they are not you. That knowledge is adapted to your context and then delivered in your own personal style. You become another path in the nexus in which the brilliance can illuminate others.

Then, as now, I find myself not only surrounded by, but engaged with those I thought out of my reach. A bit like I've been dropped into the private world of a Hollywood icon or royalty. I remain enamoured by my cohorts and those further afield to my immediate connections but no longer am I isolated from brilliance that illuminates!

Go boldly where you have never gone before - beyond listening to your favourite crews...tweet with them, engage with them through whichever channel you find them and discover your own brilliance in the conversations that ensue.

Tell me about those that have illuminated you with their brilliance because I have a sneaking suspicion you also shine on us through your story!

My appreciation and gratefulness to past and present crew members of my various forays.
