II186-Islands on the Brink: Tourism vs. Housing??

The media has been flooded with reports from islanders protesting on their streets over massive tourism and its effect on local housing opportunities, natural resource management, and life quality for the residential communities.

Since the pandemic, tourism rates have reached historic highs, particularly during summertime.

The Balearic Islands in Spain, as well as the Greek, Italian and Portuguese Islands are currently suffering from obscene property prices and displaced residents, as the governmental entities try to introduce balanced measures to protect residents without destabilising their economic status.

Covering and discussing these topics is essential to our events, including the upcoming Virtual Island Summit. Join us from September 9-13 to be part of the sustainability conversation.
