Ignore the noise and learn to listen
Listening is in danger of being a lost art.
In the past couple of weeks, the World has been digesting a Presidential debate where two white men in their 70s repeatedly talked over each other and hurled insults (one more than the other). The UK heard a government minister then the Prime Minister “misspeak” when it came to clearly telling people the current rules for living through the pandemic, while a third MP flagrantly flouted them to travel from Scotland to Westminster and back. There is so much noise at the moment that important messages are being confused or simply not heard.
The best interviewers don’t just concentrate on asking their questions but they listen, so they can adapt and flex depending on what their subject tells them. When dealing with the aforementioned politicians, this ability is a vital part of the interviewer’s arsenal. It means getting to the best tale, and this approach is at the heart of The Freudcast. We like fascinating people at freuds. Our currency is interesting stories. Our podcast marries the two.
Overhear artist and author Charlie Mackesy in his home studio talking about putting together his debut bestselling book. Melissa Hemsley reveals the mental struggles of becoming famous for food while feeling like a fraud (which she isn’t). JB Gill talks about his improbable journey from chart-topping boyband to welly-wearing farmer. Our own Matthew Freud literally takes a walk down memory lane to revisit the offices his business has occupied over the past 35 years.
You can also learn more about other big important organisations like WeTransfer, The New York Times and the UN World Food Programme, and smaller but just as influential ones like Tortoise and The River Café.
In all, there are more than twenty episodes you can download now in the usual places like Apple and Spotify. We don’t waffle on but like to keep it to a succinct half-an-hour so – but we’re not strict about that. We just know how to share a good tale, so take some time, and listen like we do. If you want to talk to us about it, or podcasts in general, we're all ears too.
