On Ignorance and Arguments

Have you been in heated arguments when, at some point, you feel like no matter what you say or what facts you provide, the other party will get increasingly angry and twist whatever you say as if it proves their point?

Have you been in conversations when you feel the other person wants to win the argument at any cost, not caring about the facts or reality?

If so, the question is why? Why would you waste time arguing with somebody who does not care about the truth or finding a solution to a problem and only cares about winning an argument? This is an incredible waste of time.

If a person is ignorant about a topic, has fixed beliefs and cannot accept a change, any argument is just an emotional battle without a result. To achieve progress in a conversation and find solutions, both parties should be open to changing their minds, consider different points of view and admit that they may not know or understand something.

If there is ignorance, there is a lack of shared understanding and ability to accept new information. Whatever reason people have for that — anger, resentment, ego — there is no way to move forward and no benefit in arguing.

Those trying to change the point of view of ignorant people pay the price with their time and energy and achieve no results…

Valid point! I just had a heated two-hour argument with a close family member about a hot political issue. No matter how many well-supported facts I presented, it felt like everything bounced off a wall of ignorance, with no sign of openness to listening or even considering a partial truth. In the end, neither of us changed our beliefs, and I was left with a sense of disappointment and a feeling that it was a waste of valuable energy. Sometimes, I engage in these debates just to reassure myself that I still hold onto my moral convictions and need to express them out loud.
