Igniting a Tech Movement in Kochi
The launch of the Kochi Hackathon is indeed a significant event, especially for a city that previously had little exposure to tech culture and similar events. The event was announced on a pan-India basis, aimed at infusing Kochi with a vibrant tech culture. This initiative had dual objectives: firstly, to provide local talents with exposure to technological advancements and practices prevalent in other parts of the country, enabling them to interact and exchange ideas with peers nationwide. Secondly, the event focused on instilling a culture of timely delivery, product-based development, real-time evaluation, and mentorship, critical elements that contribute to the growth of a robust tech ecosystem.
The Kochi Hackathon, spotlighting Fintech as its theme, was announced pan-India, offering an impressive prize and mentorship opportunities from leading experts in the field. This substantial incentive, along with the specialized focus on financial technology, attracted hundreds of applications from various parts of the country. Due to logistical constraints, we had to pre-screen these applications carefully, ensuring that only the most promising participants could attend.
The expert panel at the Kochi Hackathon included prominent figures such as Jose Thattil, CEO and Co-Founder of Phi Commerce, who brought in-depth expertise in payment technologies; Sud Srinivasan, Chief Digital Officer and Co-Founder of nStore Technologies, known for his extensive experience; and Jyothi Varma, a seasoned payment professional with a significant track record in launching pioneering financial products. Most of the experts were professionals with experience in payment channels like Mastercard and Rupay, India's own card payment network, as well as similar organizations. Their collective expertise significantly enriched the discussions, providing participants with invaluable insights and networking opportunities, thereby enhancing the hackathon's impact on regional technological development.
The evaluation process turned out to be tighter than we initially imagined. Many participants arrived with a core idea, while others came with more matured plans. We implemented a three-phase evaluation system focusing on technology, business potential, and go-to-market strategies. This rigorous process helped ensure that the ideas not only had technical merit but were also viable in the market. The hackathon was well-covered in media across multiple platforms including social networks and tech communities, helping to boost visibility and engagement. This comprehensive approach not only heightened the hackathon’s profile but also showcased Kochi’s potential as a burgeoning hub for technological innovation.

Securing a venue well-equipped for tech activities and ensuring a smooth registration and participation process were foundational to the success of the Kochi Hackathon, which differentiated itself from other events with its unique logistics and arrangements. Given the total duration of 36 hours, it was crucial to create a conducive atmosphere that supported thinking, working, and resting. Adequate food and refreshments were strategically placed to maintain high energy levels throughout the event. Additionally, we enhanced the experience by conducting interactive masterclasses during lunch and dinner, adding an educational dimension to meal times.
Deciding the criteria for awarding prizes was another critical aspect of the event. Whether to focus on the creativity of ideas or the technical complexity of the solutions required careful consideration. Ultimately, we emphasized the quality and innovation of the ideas presented, aiming to reward the most impactful and feasible solutions. While some ideas were promising, we noted a lack of proof of execution; others were doable but lacked scalability. Our priority was to select executable ideas that could work on a large scale and had a high chance of securing funding, ensuring that the winners not only had innovative concepts but also viable business models that could thrive in real-world scenarios.
Despite these complexities, the Kochi Hackathon turned out to be a tremendous success. It not only showcased the emerging tech talent in Kerala but also began to cultivate a vibrant tech culture in the region. The event's collaborative atmosphere fostered innovation and creativity, demonstrating that with determination and the right approach, challenges can be transformed into opportunities for growth and development.
