In the coming week, between 19-21 July 2023, the Youth of Africa that will gather in Lusaka, Zambia at the AfCFTA Youth Symposium, organized by the AfCFTA Secretariat.
Adeola Fayehun, a Nigerian Journalist/Satirist speaks of Africa as a sleeping giant. In her delivery, at times she is funny, but at the very same time, she has moments that are not so flattery about the continent. However, when she proceeds further, it becomes very clear that the overall idea is that of trying to wake this giant that is Africa.
As of today, Africa, with all its mineral resources, the kind weather and youthful population, still ranks near the bottom when it comes to competing in the global economy. So; with the quest of Awakening the sleeping that is Africa, the implementation of the AFCTA, has to be such that it triggers the intended international competitiveness and growth that Africa so desires. As well as boosts its economies in order to underpin the projected rapid commercial development.
In the symposium, the aim will be to engage young business owners, per Regional Block, with a goal of understanding and framing the aspirations of the ideal African market that the youth wants. The symposium will therefore provide an opportunity for these aspirations to be presented to African Leaders.
With that quest, what we cannot overlook is that one of the key contributing factors is that Africa currently has disjointed markets that limit the potential of its efficiency in Africa’s economic growth. As such, as Africans, we will need a WILL that will transcend the post-colonial divisions that have long been on hurdle to the true potential of this continent; be it on language or culture or ethnicity, or geography.
As to the true impact of AfCFTA: we will need each State Party to commit,” to developing policies and make investments on the infrastructure (such as roads) in order to fully enable integration and trade facilitate envisaged by the AFCTA.
?With the coming into effect of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA); we are now in a unique, special, and defining moment; where we have within our control the tool which can defragment Africa and moves it up to the top of the table.
