Several major events in the annual SAP calendar took place this month, and SAP released this quarter’s financial results.

SAP Q3 2024 Financial Results

SAP demonstrated robust growth, particularly in cloud services. The company reported a cloud backlog increase of 25% year-over-year, reaching €15.4 billion, and a 34% rise in Cloud ERP Suite revenue. Total revenue grew by 9% to €8.5 billion, driven by high demand in the cloud segment, while IFRS and non-IFRS operating profits rose by 29% and 27%, respectively. SAP raised its 2024 financial outlook, emphasizing its commitment to cloud expansion and efficiency improvements as part of its transformation program.

SAP’s CFO Dominik Asam said: “We are very pleased with our third quarter performance. The 2024 transformation program has already started to yield efficiency improvements. This allowed us to deliver a strong operating profit and free cash flow, while retaining our topline momentum. We’re now focused on carrying that momentum into Q4 to safeguard the achievement of our 2025 ambition amidst a highly volatile environment.”

SAP TechEd 2024

At SAP TechEd 2024, key announcements centered on AI, low-code/no-code advancements, and new integrations for SAP consultants. SAP Business AI expanded with predictive and conversational AI for SAP S/4HANA, automating tasks across support, finance, and supply chains. SAP Build’s low-code tools now include pre-built templates, supporting process automation without deep coding skills, while the Generative AI Hub introduces large language models for ABAP applications, enhancing consultants’ custom solutions.

New innovations and use cases for SAP’s generative AI assistant Joule were demonstrated, including Joule’s new ability to work with collaborative and specialised AI agents on complex workflows, and other AI-supporting products like SAP Knowledge Graph (a new dimension in SAP’s data fabric) were announced.

TechEd also featured over 500 learning sessions on SAP BTP and Fiori, offering consultants best practices for building scalable, integrated applications. Catch up with on-demand replays here.

SAP Spend Connect 2024

At SAP Spend Connect Live 2024, SAP announced that Joule would expand its capabilities across SAP platforms, including SAP Ariba, SAP Fieldglass, and SAP Business Network. This integration is set to be available starting in Q4 2024. This integration is designed to enhance automation by handling routine inquiries and providing insights across procurement and logistics, accelerating common tasks in these systems by up to 80%.

In SAP Ariba, Joule will offer features such as generating RFPs, surfacing supplier insights, and recommending purchasing options. For SAP Fieldglass, it will assist with job postings, service requests, and template recommendations to save time. Within SAP Business Network, Joule will support logistics and asset management, helping with tasks like invoice error analysis and connecting suppliers with new business prospects through AI-driven keyword matching.

Additional insights shared at the event emphasized the importance of business networks for supply chain resilience, a critical factor in today’s competitive landscape. These advancements equip consultants with robust tools for supporting digital transformation and enhancing client operations across spend management.

The DSAG Annual Congress

At the 2024 DSAG Jahreskongress, SAP underscored its commitment to cloud migration through initiatives like "RISE with SAP" and "GROW with SAP," aimed at easing the transition for on-premises customers. However, as expected some DSAG members voiced ongoing concerns that SAP’s focus on cloud innovation marginalizes on-premises deployments, and nearly half of surveyed companies view the S/4HANA cloud approach as not meeting their exact needs.

AI was also highlighted, with SAP planning to embed AI models from providers like AWS and Google into its Business Technology Platform (BTP), with up to 100 new use cases by year-end. While AI promises enhanced functionality, DSAG members requested more transparency on data handling and viable business use cases. For SAP consultants, this reinforces the need to guide clients through cloud vs. on-premises transitions and AI applications, emphasizing cost transparency, data flexibility, and alignment with user expectations.
