Self-awareness and the ability to manage emotions are intrinsic in leaders who can develop a positive culture within a team that supports team performance and innovation. Data from a Harvard Business Review survey shows that companies with leaders committed to personal development have 22% higher employee engagement and 21% greater profitability than those others. It shows how important it is for leaders to focus on their growth to improve their team's productivity.
Impact - Organizations transform when personal leadership occurs! It allows leaders to establish an environment where people feel appreciated, heard, and inspired. This then drives up levels of trust, collaboration, and productivity. For instance, at Google, leaders who practice personal leadership principles have been instrumental in creating a culture of innovation and high performance. These leaders understand that their behavior sets the tone for the entire team, influencing how members interact and collaborate.
Challenges—Personal leadership, however essential it might be, is also not without its stumbling blocks. One needs more awareness. We may need to be made aware of this, and we will likely blame our results on other things going wrong. Keeping emotional intelligence and resilience in tough times is another challenge. Ways to navigate these hurdles include asking for feedback more often, learning as we go along, and practicing mindfulness. We must welcome these approaches to improve our leadership with our peers and bosses and positively impact team dynamics.
Relevance for Boardrooms - We must learn and model personal leadership as board members. Demonstrating personal leadership establishes a high bar for mediocrity and is an example of accountability that leads to success. Trends like AI-powered tools for personal development and virtual reality-based leadership training will open fresh avenues to learn and, more importantly, connect deeply with our team. As things change and shift, leaders focused on personal growth will be better able to maneuver all changes and lead their teams through them.
