I have seen how powerful and instrumental effective leadership can transform a business. Please think of the turnaround story of a midsized manufacturing company I worked with. The company was losing touch with industry and technology changes. By implementing new technologies and ways of doing things, the company transformed due to forward-thinking leadership, which soon contributed to its recovery and made it the top industry leader. This is solid proof of the part that leadership has to play in guiding and instigating business evolution.
Importance—Organizations must adapt continuously to thrive in a fast-changing business world. In a McKinsey study, 70% of complex, large-scale change programs delivered under their goals. Effective leadership is generally needed for these statistics to be turned around promptly. Successful transformation requires leaders who inspire, empower, guide, and support their teams through change. The urgency of this topic is emphasized by the current trends in digital transformation, globalization, and sustainability, which are increasingly needed for sustainable business practices.
Impact - Effective leadership and business transformation go hand in glove. Leaders influential at leading change can guide their organizations through uncertainties and fluctuations, lead them to new opportunities, and help ensure long-term excellence. For instance, when Satya Nadella became the CEO of Microsoft, one of his primary focus areas was changing a culture in an innovation sense and collaboration. That transformation has resulted in new products and services, driving the company to become a more valuable business. This has also been a virtuous circle in the likes of IBM, where Ginni Rometty's push to move towards cloud computing and AI has given them enough entities to justify their funding.
Challenges - Leadership is the critical driver for business transformation, but many challenges exist. One of the biggest obstacles is change resistance. Given that people are afraid that a new process will come and they also can lose their jobs (think AI), of course, one mode is continuing in race and another way to keep the job. Real-life solutions to these problems include developing an atmosphere of openness, constantly training and supporting our teams, and setting achievable goals. We must also show empathy and emotional resilience in leading our teams during this transformation with patience.

As board members, we need to assess whether the executive team possesses the necessary skill set and vision for change to deliver on transformational projects. It's not just about choosing the right leaders but also providing them with everything they need to succeed. We can sponsor programs that develop emerging leaders, stimulate innovation, and create a culture of ongoing empowerment and improvement. We need to inspire and lead in transformation and pave the way for sustainable growth of their organization.

This trend toward more involved diversity and inclusion will also impact how leadership evolves, ensuring that different perspectives and voices are leading transformational efforts in the coming years.
