Hello, and welcome to the?Mindset Code, a newsletter that helps you use your mind to change your life. In this edition, we will discover how a simple technique can help you overcome your fears and anxieties. This technique is called the 5-second countdown, and it is based on the idea that you have only five seconds to act on your goals before your mind stops you with doubts and excuses. By counting backward from five to one, you can break your bad habits and start your good ones.
Nisha was a senior team lead in a cloud solution-providing company. She was in charge of a project that involved developing a new feature for a client’s website. The deadline was approaching, but Nisha was feeling overwhelmed by the amount of work she had to do. She often found herself procrastinating on her tasks, checking her email, browsing social media, or chatting with her colleagues. She knew she had to focus, but she couldn’t seem to get started.
The next morning, when her alarm went off, she didn’t hit the snooze button as usual. Instead, she counted down from 5 to 1 and then got out of bed. She felt a surge of energy. She got ready for work and headed to the office.
At her desk, she looked at her to-do list and picked the most important task for the day. She felt a wave of resistance and anxiety. She wanted to do something else instead. But she remembered the 5-second rule and counted down from 5 to 1 and then opened her laptop and started working on the task. She was surprised by how quickly she got into the flow and how much progress she made.
She repeated this process throughout the day, whenever she felt tempted to procrastinate or avoid a challenge. She counted down from 5 to 1 and then did what she needed to do. She also applied the rule to the concept of taking breaks. She realized that she needed to rest and recharge her energy every once in a while. She set a timer for 25 minutes and worked without interruption. Then she counted down from 5 to 1 and then took a 5-minute break. She used this time to stretch, drink water, or meditate. She found that this helped her stay focused and productive.
