IGEL OS is based on Debian 12 now

As long as I know, the IGEL OS was based on Ubuntu, on their LTSR releases to provide a stable and long supported base.

As IGEL is playing a bigger and more important role in Enterprise business, they now decided to switch the base to Debian 12 (aka Bookworm), starting with the just released 12.5.0 version.

As a former Presales Engineer at IGEL Technology and now covering partner topics and issue at Arrow ECS Switzerland (for IGEL, Commvault, Citrix, VMWare), I wanted to know what are the advantages for Debian over Ubuntu. That's what I found (and enough sentences starting with "As" ??)

In the realm of Linux distributions, Debian and Ubuntu are two of the most popular choices for business environments. While both are robust and reliable, they focus on different needs and priorities.

?? Stability and Reliability

Debian is renowned for its exceptional stability and reliability, making it an ideal choice for mission-critical applications and server environments. Its slower release cycle ensures that all software packages are thoroughly tested, minimizing the risk of unexpected behavior and bugs. This stability is crucial for businesses that require continuous, uninterrupted operations.

?? Security

Debian's commitment to open-source principles and its rigorous testing process contribute to its strong security features. The Debian security team delivers timely and reliable security updates, enhancing the distribution's reputation for stability and security. This is particularly important for businesses handling sensitive data or requiring high security standards.

?? Customizability and Control

Debian offers a high degree of customizability and control, allowing businesses to tailor their systems to specific needs. Its minimalistic approach and lack of pre-installed software mean that users can choose exactly what they need, reducing resource usage and potential vulnerabilities. This flexibility is valuable for businesses that require precise control over their IT infrastructure.

??♂? Community Support and Governance

Debian is a community-driven project, free from corporate influence. This decentralized governance ensures that Debian remains true to its open-source roots and is not controlled by a single entity[4][5]. This can be reasuring for businesses that value independence and transparency in their IT solutions.

?Performance and Resource Efficiency

Debian is known for its lightweight and fast performance, making it suitable for a wide range of hardware, including older or resource constrained systems. This efficiency can lead to cost savings and reduced maintenance needs, which are significant advantages for businesses.

?? Professional Support and Compatibility

While Ubuntu offers professional support services from Canonical, Debian's stability and reliability often make such support less necessary. Additionally, Debian's compatibility with a wide range of platforms and its extensive repository of open-source applications make it a versatile choice for various business needs.

? Conclusion

In conclusion, Debian's stability, security, customizability, community-driven focus and performance make it a compelling choice for business environments. While Ubuntu offers ease of use and frequent updates, Debian's reliability and control are often more critical for companies that require continuous, secure operations. For businesses prioritizing stability and security, Debian is the better option.

For my customers at CyberPatrimonium I'm also using Debian to handle the sensitive data that comes up in dealing with topics on digital heritage and privacy.
