IFUs: They don't win awards. But they do save lives.

IFUs (Instructions For Use) is information provided by the manufacturer of a prescription drug or medical device to inform the user of its intended purpose, proper use, and any precautions.
?
An IFU can comprise thirty or more steps that might include set up, a check list of items, drug administration, ancillary devices, reminders, and warnings.
?
In addition to health care professionals, the IFU needs to be understood by a patient or family care giver that has never handled a medical device any more complicated than a thermometer.
?
The medical artist or art director can expect extraordinary attention to detail: Exacting renderings of products, a slight repositioning of a finger, as well as multiple tests of skin color.
?
There will be many rounds of revisions for agency review, client review, testing, approval by the FDA, as well as last minute client changes to the product, its use or design.
?
Oh, and by the way, final size of each illustration will be about one square inch printed on a large piece of very thin paper folded up smaller than a Godiva chocolate.
?
I know, not your favorite thing to do. Won’t win any awards. But you may save a few lives.
