Fluorine Free Foams – Are we there yet?
As firefighting foam manufacturers grapple with the fluorine problem, Fomtec delves into the data.
Over 10 years into their Enviro Programme, Dafo Fomtec AB Owner and CEO John Olav Ottesen reflects on how far Fomtec’s range of Enviro Fluorine Free Foams have progressed towards the target of being able to achieve similar performance to the last generation of PFAS containing C6 fluorinated foams manufactured by Fomtec.
In this online-exclusive article, Ottesen explains why development is a process and not an event, client wishlists vs reality, verifying foam procedure, alternatives to AR-AFF and ultimately where the firefighting foam industry is in the journey to establishing a fully effective fluorine free foam. Wildfire preparedness for tomorrow
In an era marked by unprecedented wildfire activity, the urgency of rethinking wildfire preparedness has never been more pressing.
As we envision the future of wildfire policy, it is imperative to amalgamate grassroots movements, policy enhancements, and innovative strategies.
In this article, IFSJ editor Iain Hoey spoke to Michele Steinberg , Wildfire Division Director at NFPA , to discuss community engagement, policy evolution, and the NFPA’s vision for the future of wildfire preparedness. Read the interview here.
Why the Golden Thread offers peace of mind
The terms under the new Building Safety Act 2022 became enforceable from October 1st this year.
The Building Safety Act 2022 (BSA) has been developed as a new framework for the design, construction and occupation of ‘higher risk’ buildings. These buildings are defined as being a minimum of 18 metres or seven storeys in height and comprise of at least two domestic premises.
Bob Glendenning IEng MICE TIFireE , Fire Design Engineering Manager of Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine Coatings , examines why creating a ‘Golden Thread’ of information within the new legislation is so important for those involved in the intumescent coatings industry. Read more.
Tackling the challenge of violence against firefighters
The IAFF has called for legislation to counter increasing violence against firefighters and paramedics.
On Parliament Hill on October 26, the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) has asserted the urgent need for legislation with more stringent penalties in the wake of the escalating violence against fire fighters and paramedics throughout Canada.
The testimony took place before the federal Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights, endorsing Bill C-321, which was tabled by B.C. Conservative MP Todd Doherty back in March. Read more.
The real world impact of PFAS-containing foam
Despite growing concerns, AFFF is still actively being sold by distributors.
Laws and regulations are being enacted worldwide on aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF). USEPA voluntary stewardship PFAS programs have not proven effective for protecting firefighters or public health.
Individual states are taking initiative. As firefighters and citizens are becoming more aware, the change to F3 foams is occurring. Vicki Quint from the Foam Exposure Committee highlights the impacts of PFAS-containing foam from two incidents in Illinois. Read more.
The role of beavers in wildfire mitigation
Why we should be embracing beaver-based restoration techniques
Historically, the Western landscape was home to millions of beavers. The decline in their population due to the fur trade in the 1800s and early 1900s drastically altered watershed dynamics.
Without beaver dams, streambanks erode, wetlands disappear, spring flooding intensifies, and landscapes become susceptible to late summer and fall dryness.
It’s no secret among fire professionals that wetlands act as natural barriers, preventing wildfires from spreading. The role of beavers in creating and preserving these wetlands cannot be overstated. Read more.
Indonesia's burning land problem
Activists have reported four companies to the local police for alleged burning
Activists in Indonesia have lodged official complaints with local authorities against two industrial forest firms and two palm oil companies.
The reports follow satellite image analysis conducted from September 2-10, revealing 3,650 hectares of burning within the companies’ concessions. Read more.
The impacts of smoke inhalation
Understanding the hazards of wildland firefighting is crucial for the health and safety of these heroes
In a recent study conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health , researchers have unveiled insights about the inhalation exposures faced by wildland firefighters.
This research, which is part of the 2-year Wildland Firefighter Exposure and Health Effects study, was undertaken in collaboration with the USDA Forest Service and the U.S. Department of the Interior .
The study was based on observations made during a 3-day wildfire incident involving a single crew. Read more.
