Fire Grants and Safety Act receives Senate approval

The US Senate has passed the Fire Grants and Safety Act (S. 870).
This legislation aims to extend and fund the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program and the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant program.
The bill authorises $750 million for these programs from FY 2024 through FY 2028 and delays the programs’ sunset date to September 30, 2030. Read more.

Canadian National launches fire-fighting trains to combat wildfires
Introduction of new fire-fighting trains
CN has introduced two new fire-fighting trains, named ‘Trident’ and ‘Neptune’, designed to enhance fire suppression capabilities in isolated areas.
These new trains are additions to ‘Poseidon’, which was initially developed as a proof-of-concept.
All three trains will be operated by specially trained employees and contractors to combat wildfires along CN’s routes. Read more.

US firefighter fatalities decline by 8% in 2023
Reduction in career firefighter fatalities
The NFPA released its “Fatal Firefighter Injuries in the U.S. in 2023” report, which shows a total of 89 on-duty firefighter fatalities in the United States in 2023, an 8% decline from the 97 fatalities reported in 2022.
The 89 deaths include 50 volunteer firefighters and 30 career firefighters, with the remaining nine fatalities being non-municipal firefighters. Read more.
