HMICFRS publishes 'Standards of behaviour: The handling of misconduct in fire and rescue services’
The His Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS) has released a comprehensive report addressing the ongoing challenges and improvements needed in handling misconduct within Fire and Rescue Services (FRS) in England.
Since HMICFRS’ mandate expanded in 2017, its continuous inspections have aimed to foster better cultures and reduce misconduct within FRSs.
Despite some progress, the latest publication: ‘Standards of behaviour: The handling of misconduct in fire and rescue services’ highlights significant areas require attention and reform.

The finalists for the 2024 Women in Fire Safety Awards have been announced
The awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on Thursday, 12th September 2024 at the Leonardo Royal Hotel in London.
Award categories include Woman of the Year, Lifetime Achievement Award, International Woman of the Year, Rising Star Award, Fire Service Award, Influencer of the Year, Fire Safety Manager of the Year, International Rising Star, Business Manager of the Year, Administrator of the Year, Inclusive Company Award, and Diversity Champion.
Biden reauthorises the USFA through 2028
A continued commitment to fire safety in America
US President Biden has signed a bill reauthorising the U.S. Fire Administration through September 30, 2028. The USFA collaborates with federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial partners, as well as nongovernmental stakeholders, to enhance public safety.
This includes data collection and analysis, managing national fire and emergency medical service programs, raising public awareness about fire safety, reducing community risks, and offering specialised training through the National Fire Academy.
Established in 1974 by Congress through the Federal Fire Prevention and Control Act, the USFA has played a crucial role in reducing fire incidents and fatalities across the nation. Read more.

Comprehensive online resource for building safety launched in UK
A new, comprehensive, and free online centre for building safety information has been launched this month in the UK.
The Building Safety Wiki aims to increase awareness of fire and life safety issues in the planning, commissioning, design, construction, surveying, maintenance, and management of buildings.
This initiative comes ahead of the Grenfell Tower Inquiry’s final report and recommendations, intending to share vital knowledge and information about the new building safety regime in the UK, including the Building Safety Act 2022 and related fire safety legislation. Find out more.

Fire service calls for end to staff abuse
Rise in staff abuse incidents reported by UK fire services
Fire services across the UK are calling for an end to physical and verbal abuse against their staff, following an increase in such incidents.
The London Fire Brigade has recorded a 35% rise in reported abuse cases in 2023 compared to the previous year.
The majority of these incidents involved verbal abuse, but there were also physical assaults, with one female firefighter requiring hospital treatment after being punched. Read more.

Fire becomes sixth largest in state history
California authorities announced the arrest of a suspect in connection with the Park Fire, which has become the state’s largest wildfire of the year.
The fire began when a burning car was pushed into a gully and has since spread over 195 square miles near Chico.
The identity of the arrested suspect has not been released by the authorities. Read more.

The National Fire Protection Association ( NFPA ) will open a new office in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

First high-rise in Scotland finishes cladding remediation
The Aurora Apartments in Aberdeen have become the first high-rise building in Scotland to have hazardous cladding removed and replaced under a government pilot scheme initiated after the Grenfell tragedy.
The nine-storey building underwent extensive construction to comply with stringent fire regulations established following the Grenfell Tower fire in London.
