IET 2019 SA/NT Present Around The World (PATW) Young Professionals Heat 1
? John Noonan 2019
Present Around The World (PATW) Competition
In 2019, the IET SA/NT Local Network established a number of heats for Young Professional Engineers and STEM Professionals from the local community to compete in the SA/NT PATW Competition. In 2019, SA/NT will hold at least 3 heats for Young Professionals up to the age of 30, as well as the traditional event for the Universities in SA/NT. The winners of the heats will come together in a final event at the end of the year to determine the SA/NT PATW Winner for 2019.
Young Professionals PATW Heat 1
It is the vision of the SA/NT Local Network to help talented young engineers from SA & NT move on to the global stage and represent the Asia Pacific Region of the IET in the global final each year if possible. The Local Network PATW Organising Committee wishes each of the 2019 competitors the best of luck in the competition and in their future careers. The IET is here to help you through all stages of your career in Australia or wherever your career takes you around the world. We encourage you to join the IET and our active network. In 2019, the first Heat of the PATW welcomed 4 excellent Competitors.
- Matthew Tripodi: Matthew is an Engineer who works for Resonate Consultants and up until recently has been working for Resonate's sister company Ping Services. Matthew is experienced in Acoustics, Vibration and Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) electromagnetic fields. Having a broad acoustic background, Matthew now specialises in providing consulting services for highly sensitive laboratory facilities. Matthew is also the immediate past Chair of the IET SA/NT YP and is the current Treasurer.
- Jesse Cordoma: Jesse is a Civil Engineer at GHD. Jesse completed a degree in Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering in mid-2018. Jesse commenced working at GHD soon after. Outside of Engineering, Jesse has competed in Professional Athletics, plays Tennis and enjoys socialising with friends and family. Socialising is where Jesse first discovered his love of cocktails. Jesse found it surprising to see the lack of cocktails at social gatherings and events. Jesse is a driven and passionate problem-solving person. Jesse's passion motivated him to consider and solve the "Cocktail Problem" and Qtonic was born.
- James Mitchell (BEng, MIET): James is a Civil Engineer currently working for the City of Onkaparinga as Asset Programming Planner. James is responsible for driving a coordinated approach to capital works over multiple years for the delivery of infrastructure projects with respect to time, cost and quality. Prior to working for Local Government, James previously worked in the private sector as a Civil Engineer. James is an active volunteer for the IET on an international board of engineers focusing on inspiring, informing and influencing the global community of young engineers supporting and promoting technology innovation to meet the needs of society.
- Benjamin Schultz: Benjamin is a Biomedical and Electronics Engineer, graduating from Flinders University. During his time at Flinders, Benjamin received many awards, including the Flinders University Engineering Medal, awarded by Engineers Australia for the overall best-performing Engineering graduate across all Engineering Degrees. Benjamin currently works at Consilium Technology, a company that provides Software Engineering excellence and practical insight to cutting-edge technologies, including quantum computing and machine learning.
2019 PATW Organisers
The Local Network thanks Dr. Maged Awadalla, Mr Ash Craven (IET SA/NT YP Chair), Lyndon Hill, and Mr Matthew Tripodi (IET SA/NT YP Treasurer) for their excellent and professional work in coordinating the 2019 YP PATW heats. Thanks also to the many members of the IET SA/NT Local and YP Networks for expanding the PATW competition in 2019.
A special thank you to Gail Jackman, Benjamin McCarl and David Klemitz for agreeing to act as Judges for the YP PATW events.

Winner of 2019 YP PATW Heat 1
After prolonged deliberation and consideration of the detailed judging template, the Chair of the LN was called to offer advice on the final decision. After discussion between the judges and the Chair, it was agreed that the first Heat could not split a winner from a runner up out of the 4 speakers. It is with great pleasure that the decision from the judges was to award a tied result and two winners. Congratulations to Jesse Cordoma and Benjamin Schultz for winning Heat 1 of the YP PATW events in 2019. Both Ben and Jesse will go on to compete in the SA/NT PATW Final later in 2019.
A Brief History of the IET
In 2018, the IET operates a global Engineering Association from its headquarters at Savoy Place in London. With some 168,000 members worldwide, the Institution of Engineering and Technology is one of the premier societies for professional engineers and technologists. IET covers the science, engineering, and technology of biomedical engineering, communications, electronics, computing, software, control, information technology, telecommunications, power engineering, and manufacturing. The IET's history is founded in the global evolution of Engineering, Manufacturing and Technological Associations that goes back as far as the 19th Century.

IET's origins stem from the founding of the Society of Telegraph Engineers (STE) in London on 17th May 1871. On the 1st of January 1889, the STE formally changed its name to the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE). The IEE's membership more than tripled from 2,064 to 7,045 between the years 1895 and 1914 illustrating the growth of electrical activity around the globe. Following the merger of the Institution of Manufacturing Engineers (IME) with the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) in 1991, the IEE became the authority responsible for awarding Prizes like the James N Kirby Award. The SA/NT Local Network in 2017 formally awarded the latest James N Kirby Award winner, South Australia's own Rod Hook. The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) was formed in 2006 by the joining together of the IEE and the Institution of Incorporated Engineers (IIE).
