Write about the following topic:

Marriages are bigger and more expensive nowadays than in the past. Why is this the case? Is it a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.

It is often seen that the way people celebrate marriage has completely changed these days by making it more vivid and luxurious regardless of the cost that is incurred. This essay will elaborate on the causes of the same and it will favour the numerous negative sides of lavish marriages in the ensuing passages.

To commence with, the major reason behind people spending their life savings on marriages is due to the lucrative wedding ceremonies conducted by the people in the western culture. This particular event in one's life not only shows their social status but also has influenced the new couples immensely and perhaps they are pressured to celebrate their marriages extravagantly. Another reason for this could be parents trying their best to make their children's wedding grand unforgettable and to showcase their social status in society and on social media. For instance, today's generation has raised their expectations and has set minimum criteria when it comes to celebrating marriages, they hire fashion designers and event managers to make the ceremony stand out from the crowd and to flaunt on social networking sites.

On the other hand, it is certainly a negative development for society as these expensive marriages create false hopes in the mind of the young generation and when their parents are unable to replicate others; it leads the newlyweds heartbroken and unsatiated. Moreover, it leads to piles of debt on both sides of the family and its aftermath will be visible in their children's upbringing. For example, if an indigent parent dares to celebrate this big day by taking huge loans, or by using their retirement funds, they will end up paying EMIs for the rest of their lives.

In conclusion, with regards to the former, making weddings remarkable and having the urge to showcase their social status on social media are the major reasons for huge and costly weddings and subsequently as supported by the latter view, it has led to unrealistic expectations and an increase on the financial burden for the families.
