IELTS GENERAL TRAINING

IELTS GENERAL TRAINING

KNOW ABOUT IELTS GENERAL TRAINING:

The first question is what is IELTS? IELTS is an English language proficiency test which stands for International English Language Testing System. It is an English language proficiency test that test students on 4 language skills- Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

IELTS General Training is for those test takers who wish to live and work abroad in English-Speaking country.

It focuses mainly on analysing an individual’s command on the language, his/her confidence while conversing in English in situations that are usually encountered in a native English-Speaking country.

It is beneficial for those candidates who want to work in an English-Speaking country, or are looking to show proficiency in this language in one’s own country. It is ideal for candidates wishing to emigrate to English-speaking countries, including Canada, Australia, New Zealand or the UK or who wish to study or train below degree level.

The IELTS General Training test uses daily life English to test the candidates on practical, everyday contexts. The tasks and tests reflect both workplace and social situations which makes the IELTS test score a common prerequisite for vocational training in construction, hospitality and leisure, and tourism industries.

If we were to compare IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training, no exam is “easier” than the other. They just have a different focus.

IELTS can be given in a both paper-based and a computer-based format.

IELTS GENERAL TRAINING EXAM PATTERN:

Writing Module Duration is of 60 minutes.

Task 1- Letter Writing

Here you will be a given a letter to write which could be formal, semi formal and personal letter. You have to write a minimum of 150 words and follow a structure for the same. You are advised to complete this task within 20 minutes.

Task 2 – Essay

You will be asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem.

Now, task 2- this essay is asked out of general 24-25 topics- like crime, globalisation, environment, job, museums etc and it should be a minimum of 250 words and it is advised that you complete this task within 40 minutes.

Now a few things you should keep in mind for the writing module:

  1. Writing style should be formal for both tasks.
  2. Answers must be given on the answer sheet and must be written in full.
  3. Notes or bullet points are not acceptable as answers.
  4. You will be penalised if your answer is too short because they want to know if you can express the given task properly and that is why word limit is a minimum of 150 words for task 1 and 250 words for task 2.

Now - to ace IELTS General Training. You need to focus on a few things.

  1. Basic grammar should be sorted.
  2. Your writing style and how well you use complex writing structures and sentences.
  3. Top notch content and Ideas.
  4. Task interpretation that will help you address all aspects of the question asked.

All of these things we cover at the TEST INSTITUTE and we make sure that Writing - a very scary module becomes very easy - because we have been doing this with a lot of experience and we have seen students drastically improving their IELTS writing with our tips and methods.

Reading Module Duration is of 60 minutes.??

The Reading section consists of 40 questions, designed to test a wide range of reading skills. These include reading for gist, reading for main ideas, reading for detail, skimming, understanding logical argument and recognising writers' opinions, attitudes and purpose.

Total number of questions are 40 for e.g. multiple choice, identifying information, identifying the writer’s views/claims, matching information, matching headings, matching features, matching sentence endings, sentence completion, summary completion, note completion, table completion, flow-chart completion, diagram label completion and short-answer questions.

Now to answer Test takers are required to transfer their answers to an answer sheet during the time allowed for the test. No extra time is allowed for transfer.

Every question is 1 mark and you need to be extra careful with spellings and grammar because poor spellings and you will loose out on that mark.

Now to ace your IELTS Reading - there are a few things to consider:

  1. Your reading habit and your reading speed.
  2. Your eye to catch paraphrasing.
  3. Your ability to analyse the text according to the question type asked.

Listening Module duration is of 30 minutes audio.

You will listen to four recordings of native English speakers and then write your answers to a series of questions. Every recording has 10 sections and if you are appearing for paper based format for your IELTS General Training exam- then you get 10 minutes extra to transfer your answers to your answer sheet.

Recording 1 – a conversation between two people set in an everyday social context.

Recording 2 – a monologue set in an everyday social context, e.g. a speech about local facilities.

Recording 3 – a conversation between up to four people set in an educational or training context, e.g. a university tutor and a student discussing an assignment.

Recording 4 – a monologue on an academic subject, e.g. a university lecture.

The recordings are heard only once. They include a range of accents, including British, Australian, New Zealand, American and Canadian.

A variety of question types are used, chosen from the following: multiple choices, matching, plan /map/diagram labelling, form/note/table/flow-chart/summary completion, sentence completion.

Again - make sure that spellings are correct while transferring to the answer sheet- because otherwise you will loose out on that mark.

This module is same for both IELTS General Training and IELTS Academic.

We at the TEST INSTITUTE make sure we analyse your current listening skills and then work with you accordingly - so for starters - we give you pointers on how to follow the audio in different scenarios for instance - directions, educational contexts and how to solve questions accordingly. We make sure we practice with you in different speeds and different kind of questions so you get a sure shot at this exam.

Speaking Module duration is of 11- 14 minutes.

The speaking section assesses your use of spoken English. Every test is recorded.

  • Part 1 - the examiner will ask you general questions about yourself and a range of familiar topics, such as home, family, work, studies and interests. This part lasts between four and five minutes. Variable numbers of questions are asked.
  • Part 2 - you will be given a card which asks you to talk about a particular topic. You will have one minute to prepare before speaking for up to two minutes.
  • Part 3 - you will be asked further questions about the topic in Part 2. These will give you the opportunity to discuss more abstract ideas and issues. This part of the test lasts between four and five minutes. No. of questions asked here depends on the examiner.
