CEFR
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is a framework that was created by the Council of Europe to provide a comprehensive and transparent way of describing the skills and knowledge associated with learning, teaching and using languages.
The CEFR is divided into three main levels: A1, A2 and B1. Each level is further subdivided into two sub-levels, making a total of six levels.
The table below shows the approximate time it takes to reach each level, as well as a brief description of the skills and knowledge associated with each level.
A1: Basic user – Can understand and use simple phrases and sentences.
A2: Independent user – Can communicate in simple situations.
B1: Intermediate user – Can communicate effectively in most everyday situations.
B2: Upper intermediate user – Can communicate confidently in most challenging situations.
C1: Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognize implicit meaning. Can express ideas fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions.
C2: Can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read. Can summarize information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation.
The CEFR, or Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, is a way of measuring language ability. It is used by language teachers, learners, and materials developers to describe progress in learning a language.
