IELTS ACADEMIC- Writing Task 2 Sample

To what extent do you agree or disagree with the following statement

Some of the methods used in advertising are unethical and unacceptable in today’s society.

Give reasons for your answer using your own ideas and experience.

Write at least 250 words.

In today's era, advertisement has become a great marketing tool for boosting the sales of any product or company. However, some opine that huge inappropriate and unethical content is used in an advertisement, which is not pertinent to civilized society. Here, I partially agree with the statement.


To begin with, advertisement has a huge influence on the mindset of people and thereby makes people buy items or things, but nowadays, humongous inappropriate things are used in an advertisement, which is erroneous. Firstly, the advertisement for smoking, liquor, and many other things are promoted in such a way, that it directly impacts youngster's mentality which in turn later results in destroying their career, as they consider all these things as a part of the modern world. On top of that, sometimes, in the advertisement, religion is often taken into consideration which may create communal tensions between the people and can even obliterate harmony in the society.

On the other hand, every situation has two aspects, which are similar in this case. Advertisement is the prominent factor which helps companies in manifold ways, and methods which are used in it, cannot be considered as an unethical owing to myriad reasons. Firstly, in the advertisement, everything is shown or endorsed with a warning and disclaimer, thus it is up to the people whether they want to see that advertisement or not. For instance, in the advertisement of cigarette, the warning is clearly mentioned that it is injurious to health and it is for people of specific age groups. Besides this, the main motive of advertisement is primarily to aware people about the importance and features of any item or product, rather than to misguide people, hence nothing comes inappropriate in the advertisement.

In conclusion, I opine that advertisements should be utterly aware and guide people, then creating any negativity.
