IDSA releases preliminary draft of RAM 5

The International Data Spaces Association (IDSA) has released the preliminary draft of the Reference Architecture Model (RAM) 5. The working draft introduces a new trust perspective, replacing the previous security section, while updating the foundational aspects of the model.

“The IDS-RAM 5 working draft serves as a collaborative foundation, inviting the global data spaces community to contribute to the refinement of the Reference Architecture Model,” says Ilknur Chulani, Senior Program Manager at IDSA. “The input and expertise of the community will guide its development.”

Access the draft via Gitbook.

What’s new in RAM 5

The foundation section provides essential context for understanding the Reference Architecture Model. It introduces core concepts of data spaces, explains the fundamental principles of data sharing and establishes the framework for the subsequent technical layers.

The model maintains the five-layer structure (business, functional, process, information, and system) while introducing three critical perspectives: Trust, Certification, and Governance. The trust perspective represents a significant evolution from the previous “security” approach. It addresses trust in data spaces, moving beyond security measures to create robust, transparent, and accountable data sharing mechanisms.

Unlike its predecessor, RAM 5 will not follow a linear format. Instead, it will incorporate links between different layers and perspectives, allowing for a more interconnected and flexible exploration of its content.
