IDL Wellbeing: Empowering Students' Mental Health and Personal Development in Modern Classrooms

The latest Ofsted framework emphasises the importance of assessing and reporting on various aspects of students' mental health, wellbeing, behaviour, and attitudes. As part of this evaluation, two key judgment areas are considered: personal development and evaluating behaviours and attitudes.

At IDL, we recognise the significance of a whole-school approach to mindful practice that integrates assured teaching methods and emergent science to meet the demands of today's classrooms. In line with this approach, we have identified key points from each assessment area, highlighting how?IDL Wellbeing?can effectively reinforce positive behaviour and attitudes among students.

Evaluation of Behaviors and Attitudes

This aims to identify the key factors that have the strongest impact on students' positive behaviour and attitudes, in order to maximise their chances of achieving positive outcomes. Below are some of these factors and how?IDL Wellbeing?can be utilised to support and encourage positive behaviour and attitudes:

  • Encouraging a Calm and Orderly Environment: IDL encourages students to set and achieve goals such as "Help tidy up" and "Stay seated in class." By doing so, IDL Wellbeing not only fosters a culture of personal satisfaction and self-motivation but also aligns with school rules that aim to establish calm and orderly settings.
  • Establishing Clear Routines and Expectations: IDL Wellbeing goes beyond the classroom and encourages students to set and work towards at least three behaviour-related goals throughout all areas of school life. Goals such as "Lead a game at playtime" and "Take turns" inspire students to think about their behaviour in a comprehensive way and cultivate positive habits that can benefit them throughout their lives.
  • Fostering Respect, Courtesy, and Good Manners: During the process of setting and reviewing these goals, relatable examples are provided to reinforce positive behaviours effectively. This approach ensures that students understand and can apply the desired behaviours in their daily lives.

Evaluation of Personal Development

This section focuses on understanding the factors that contribute to students' personal growth, including resilience, confidence, independence, and mental well-being. Here are some important aspects to consider when assessing personal development, along with how IDL Wellbeing supports it:

  • Cultivating Responsible, Respectful, and Active Citizens: IDL Wellbeing's goals are designed to nurture a sense of responsibility, empathy, and respect in young minds. By introducing these values early on and developing mental toughness, we aim to reduce the likelihood of negative mental health incidents later in life.
  • Ensuring an Inclusive Environment: Inclusivity lies at the core of IDL's design, with no activities or information that may potentially exclude students based on race, social and economic status, or religion. Our aim is to create a supportive environment that meets the needs of all learners.
  • Developing Confidence, Resilience, and Knowledge: IDL Wellbeing empowers students to identify and address their worries, practice gratitude, understand their emotions, and reinforce self-belief. By actively engaging in these activities, students are encouraged to develop self-efficacy and mental toughness.
  • Promoting Physical Health and Active Lifestyles: IDL Wellbeing includes activities designed for both the body and mind. Through meditation, students can clear their minds, experience calmness, and prepare for classroom learning. Additionally, the IDL body-scan activity helps students become aware of their body and its sensations, while guided breathing exercises have been shown to reduce anxiety and symptoms of negative mental health.
  • Spiritual Development: IDL Wellbeing embraces reflective thinking about personal beliefs, fostering a lifelong curiosity for learning through engaging activities and reflective questions. Our approach encourages students to find enjoyment and fascination in learning about themselves, others, and the world around them. By focusing on competencies such as being active, reflective, organised, curious, confident, and connected, we aim to promote well-rounded approaches to mental health and instil a lifelong love for self-discovery and knowledge.

At IDL, we are committed to enhancing students' mental health and personal development, aligning with the latest Ofsted framework. Our integrated approach and emergent science provide schools with a comprehensive solution to meet the diverse needs of modern classrooms.
