Idil's experience as an intern in WFP Somalia.

Saving Lives, Changing Lives
In December 2020, the World Food Programme Somalia launched an internship project aimed at offering young, talented, female Somalis an opportunity to develop their skills in the humanitarian and development sector.
A female-only internship project of this scope is unprecedented within WFP. The launch of this project is particularly noteworthy and commendable in the complex social and cultural context of Somalia.?
The deployed interns showed eagerness to learn, enthusiasm, and excitement. Idil Ali, who joined as an Intern (Programme Agri-Livelihoods) based in Garowe, shares a few lines about her experience.
1. How would you describe your internship journey with WFP Somalia?
“I received additional work-related training from colleagues and was enrolled in a variety of courses. I received and familiarized myself with programme documents such as project proposals, work plans, and reports. I enhanced my communication skills, coordination, and networking abilities and grasped the usage of WFP tools.”
2. How I would describe the culture of WFP as an organization?
“It's a great environment where everyone is treated equally; there is no corruption, misuse of power, harassment, or discrimination. The main objective of WFP is to support countries to achieve Zero Hunger. The organisation works hard to achieve that goal by providing effective and efficient help to those in need."
3. Did the job match my expectations?
"Yes, I'm thrilled to be a part of the WFP family, and it's an absolute pleasure to be able to learn and work with UN-WFP. During my internship, I experienced far more than I expected."
4. What was the most rewarding part of the internship?
Each aspect of the internship was wonderful and beneficial, but I believe the most essential part was the experience.
5. What advice would I give someone interested in an internship with WFP?
The WFP internship program is a valuable opportunity; if you are fortunate enough to be selected, please take it seriously and apply what you have learned in your next endeavor.
Parttime Lecturer at Puntland institute of Management and Technology
3 年I am quite skeptical about WFP's recruitment process. Most of the graduates who had applied different vacancy positions at WFP have been disqualified, even after fulfilling all the requirements. Employment based on kin and kith are not aimed for developing one's skill in humanitarian sector.
