Relating — Caring for Others and the World

Appreciating, caring for, and feeling connected to others, such as neighbors, future generations or the biosphere, helps us create more just and sustainable systems and societies for everyone.

With even more delay, I humbly offer the next skill:

Humility

Being able to act in accordance with the needs of the situation without concern for one's own importance.

#Humility

This one is quite challenging. Since it goes right against one’s ego. How can you have no concern for your own importance ??

How can anyone act beyond their own interests ?

The examples coming to mind are heroic, self-sacrificing, utterly altruistic. The captain staying onboard the sinking ship, the mother starving to feed her child.

How many times in our own lifes did we have to face threats to our very existence ??And still did the right thing ?

In my corporate life, I have not seen many of these paragons of deeply felt responsibility for the greater good (however this may be defined). One’s own prosperity and/or (corporate) survival are higher prioritised on individuals’ agendas. And it may have to do with an exaggerated perception of one’s own importance which might be inevitably part and parcel of working in such organisations. You have to stage your role with verve to be recognised as valuable in the corporate play of sophisticated narcissism. Not talking from a position of superior morality, I’m guilty just the same.

What mind-set is necessary to be able to act with humility ??To assess a situation with clarity and to take appropriate action, even if it’s to one’s own (perceived) detriment ? ?It may go back to the “inner compass” skill, to the commitment to a cause, to the confidence to act constructively, and to the acceptance of one’s fallability.

Does it help to be religious, to have faith in ultimate salvation and forgiveness after going through hardships and self-sacrifice ??Maybe, but I’m no expert in that.

I’d rather stay in the here and now with my curiosity to learn, based on the experience that out there are still so many things I do not know yet, and with the enthusiasm to contribute whatever I have already acquired as knowledge.

My personal version of humility.?

Ullrich Silaba, thanks for sharing this, with every post, I am learning some new aapects of the #IDG goals. This one, #humility, resonates with me through its definition of "Being able to act in accordance with the needs of the situation without concern for one's own importance". I support and try to live by this statement myself, and there is a perspective I want to add. The aspirational timeline for achieving the UN #sustainabledevelopmentgoals is 2030. This is only a bit more than 7 years from now. Communities, societies and humanity as a whole are facing huge challenges, with climate change as the most impactful one. Having the attitude of no concern about one's importance is fine, as long as we see that everyone *is* important and can play their part through actively contributing to the #sdgs2030 - the situation for sure needs it ...
