33M French Citizens Impacted in Country's Largest-Ever Breach

A colossal breach incident in France has made February go down in cybersecurity history. The French CNIL reported that Viamedis and Almerys, two companies that handle financial data for more than half of all French citizens, had been jointly hacked mere days apart, resulting in the largest data breach in France’s history. With personal details including marital status, birthdates, ID numbers, and other compromising details now in the hands of the hackers, French citizens have been advised to be on high alert for personally targeted social manipulation campaigns.

Verizon employee compromises personal data of 63,000 colleagues

Unfortunately, the strongest reminders of good cybersecurity hygiene often come in the aftermath of a dire breach. Verizon recently revealed that over 60,000 employees have had critical data (including names, addresses, and SSN) compromised after “insider wrongdoing.” While Verizon has not revealed whether or not the incident was accidental or the result of intentional malfeasance, it highlights the necessity of data hygiene.
