Following the lead of the American Constitution, many countries, including India, designed the preamble to the Constitution. The preamble to the Indian constitution is based on the "objectives resolution" drafted and moved by Pandit Nehru and adopted by the constituent assembly. It has been amended by the 42nd Constitutional Amendment Act of 1976, which added three new words: socialist, secular, and integrity.
Text of the preamble:
We, The people of India, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a SOVEREIGN SOCIALIST SECULAR DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC and to secure to all its citizen :?
JUSTICE, social, economic, and political:
LIBERTY of thoughts, expression, belief, faith, and worship:
EQUALITY of status and of opportunity and to promote among? them all?
FRATERNITY assures the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the Nation.?
In our constituent assembly this twenty-sixth day of November 1949, do HEREBY ADOPT, ENACT AND GIVE TO OURSELVES THIS CONSTITUTION.?
