Identifying Your Unique Value Proposition
Tech Leaders
Helping technical experts scale their impact and income as business leaders
Here’s what’s in today’s edition of The Technical Leader:
__________________________________________________________________________
After being in the tech industry for the last 13 years, I’ve noticed a troubling problem with most software developers.
They struggle to understand their unique value to the job marketplace.
And it usually comes down to two reasons:
40% of people struggle with Imposter Syndrome.
Part of their brain knows they’re more than qualified to take their career to the next level.
And the other part is hesitant about taking the next step because they have a little voice inside their head saying…
“What if I fail? What if I lose friendships or relationships?”
2. Many people doubt their value to the marketplace and/or are hesitate to promote themselves
It could be that they don’t want to be seen as arrogant or ‘full of themselves’.
We work so closely to our skills and abilities that it can be hard for us to recognize the full value of what we can do as programmers.
It’s too easy to undervalue our skills without the proper perspective.
But once you overcome Imposter Syndrome and are able to understand and define your unique value, then you’ll be able to put the proper price on your value.
Putting a price on your unique value can be hard…
As an IC, your value is typically defined by your employer at an hourly or salaried rate…
But if you’re wanting to become a fCTO, you need to put your own number on your value.

By confidently and effectively communicating your value to the marketplace, it’ll make everything else easier and fall into place.
