Identifying Upcoming Players in Smart Eyewear Technology

Smart eyewear technology combines imaging and wireless connectivity in different types of eyewear. It helps individuals by collecting information while they view objects. This blog post focuses on new entrants in the new and popular field of smart glasses.

To find and analyze them, we used IPC, CPC classes, and keywords to run a specific query in PatSeer and obtain a relevant dataset. The final search query we got revealed 2000+ patent families for #smarteyewear. More specifically, we learned that the top assignees in the field were Snap, Meta Platforms, Samsung Group, Bose Corporation, and Luxottica Group.

Then we classified smart glasses broadly classified into 3 categories – audio glasses, social glasses, and smart assisted reality glasses.

  • Audio glasses?– They look like conventional glasses or sunglasses. They have sensors and speakers behind your ears from which they can send audio/music using a Bluetooth connection on your smartphone.
  • Social glasses?– They feature a pair of speakers and cameras located around the lenses. You can listen to music, answer phone calls as well as capture photos and videos with these glasses.
  • Smart assisted reality glasses?– Assisted Reality (AR) glasses have the same features as the aforementioned types of glasses. Apart from those capabilities, these glasses can deliver information in real-time for navigation, incoming phone calls, text messages, or visual search results like weather conditions.

To get a clearer picture of the top 10 new entrants patents for these 3 categories, refer to the chart given below

Smart Eye Technology - Categorization of patents filed by assignees

As seen in the figure above:

  • Solos Tech Ltd has filed the highest number of patents, all of which are related to audio glasses.
  • Xian Realtech Industry Tech Partnership Enterprise Ltd. has filed 4 patents for social glasses.

Most patents filed by the assignees are for audio glasses (12 patents in total). On the other hand, social glasses and smart assisted reality glasses are also gaining popularity steadily. These new entrants have high potential and can challenge the current leaders in this field like Bose, Snap, Meta Platforms, and Samsung.

Therefore, it’s quite evident that smart eyewear is a fast-growing market with immense potential. Bigger companies that are already active in eyewear are expanding their existing?IP portfolios?to include smart capabilities.
