Identifying Training Needs
The Role of Human Resource in Training
When we talk about training in a company, automatically the Human Resources Department comes to mind. Why? Because Training and Development is one of the main functions of the department. HR are the ones who are responsible for the growth of employees. And how does? training and growth relate?
Training is conducted to ‘brush up’ employees’ existing skills or teach them new skills entirely. Training and development initiatives are educational activities within an organisation that are designed to improve work performances, both individual and a group.
In order to assist in the development of each employee, HR plays the key role in understanding the training needs of each individual.?
There are three (3) main training needs and the differences of each, that you should understand:
Training Needs Analysis (TNA)
TNA is the first step in developing a training programme which involves analysis of training needs.? It includes finding reasons, references, standards, data, and identifying trends. The ideal outcome is a complete plan of appropriate intervention recommendations, including non-training interventions, if deemed necessary. This is the key tool for HR professionals.?
Training Needs Identification (TNI)
TNI is part of TNA’s work, but is still relevant if done separately (in isolation). The main thing in TNI is to identify who, what, and when training is needed. The ideal result is in the form of a list of target individuals or groups that are matched with a training program that can help them.

Training Needs Evaluation (TNE)
TNE is an activity that is done after training. The main focus is to look at the data and make an evaluation about the effectiveness of the TNA that has been carried out (not an analysis of the effectiveness of the training program, that’s EET, Evaluation on Effectiveness of Training). The ideal outcome is a report that provides justification that the training needs analysis has been carried out correctly and that the recommended training intervention is also correct – it should be clear that there has been improvement as targeted before action to carry out the TNA is taken.
While assisting employees for their organisation, HR personnel are also like any other employee, they also need training to pick up certain skills, as well as to develop themselves.?
