Identifying Talent

Identifying Talent

The Real Talent.

Marina Semyonova was one of the most incredible Russian ballet dancers and most revered bearer of Russia's ballet traditions. She was popular and was awarded as National Artist of the USSR.

This Russian artist, who died at the age of 101 in 2010, has some incredible lessons for HR professionals and others who work in talent identification, assessments and talent development.

As narrated by one of her former students, Marina had developed a very simple talent/mindset assessment method. All students who expressed a desire to learn dance from her had to compulsory survive a trial period with her. During the trial period, she used to teach them dance steps and observe how they reacted to her praise and advice for correction. Those students who were responsive to advise for correction and viewed criticism as a learning opportunity were considered worthy for further dance lessons. She has coached some of the best dancers throughout her 46-year teaching career.

As a dance teacher, she was very particular about the atmosphere in class and made the class both comfortable and valuable to them.

We all can learn talent identification & assessment lessons from many and some artists like Marina can be great teachers for HR professionals.
