Identifying Smart Glass Opportunities, A Focus on Turkey: Our Work with the Global Glass Leader

Objective

This project provided an in-depth analysis of Turkey's electronics and manufacturing industries to identify opportunities for the world's largest glass manufacturer, a Fortune 500 Global company with more than USD 10 billion sales revenue across the globe. ?Our objective was to assess the potential for smart glass applications—innovative materials that integrate advanced technologies such as energy efficiency, augmented display capabilities, and superior durability—across multiple sectors, including consumer electronics, white goods, smartphones, automotive components, and more. By focusing on these cutting-edge glass solutions, we aimed to help our client strategically position themselves in a rapidly evolving market.

Project Overview

Turkey has firmly established itself as a manufacturing hub for Europe, particularly in automotive, consumer electronics, and white goods. Its dynamic industrial landscape is driven by its strategic location bridging Europe and Asia, a youthful population, and growing demand for high-tech solutions. However, challenges such as macroeconomic instability and high import dependency continue to pose barriers across sectors.

Our project investigated key industries, each presenting unique opportunities for smart glass solutions:

1. Consumer Electronics and White Goods: Turkey is Europe’s leading producer of white goods and televisions and has developed robust manufacturing capabilities. While advanced materials like smart glass are underutilized, they offer significant potential to enhance product functionality, including energy efficiency and display quality.

2. Smartphones: Smartphone assembly has grown due to foreign investments and government incentives. The sector's reliance on imported components creates a critical gap for locally integrated smart glass technologies, such as scratch-resistant or glare-reducing glass.

3. Automotive Components: As a major automotive manufacturing hub for Europe, Turkey's industry is exploring lightweight and high-performance materials. Smart glass for automotive applications—such as heads-up displays, solar control, and advanced safety features—aligns with these evolving demands.

4. Laptops and Tablets: A market shaped by affordability challenges and a growing preference for cost-effective options. Smart glass applications could support innovation in touchscreens and energy-efficient displays.

5. Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs): The electronics industry’s backbone, this segment is primarily import-dependent. Opportunities exist for integrating smart glass substrates into local PCB production, enhancing performance and reliability.

6. Multifunction Printers and Copiers: While the market is declining due to digitalization, there is a demand for high-tech smart glass in advanced office automation products that prioritize durability and functionality.

7. Defense and Aerospace: Turkey's defense sector is rapidly expanding, with smart glass playing a crucial role in high-performance optics, avionics, and protective solutions.

OUR WORK INOVOLVED

  • 19 high-level interviews with industry stakeholders, including manufacturers and government representatives.
  • A comprehensive SWOT analysis for each industry, identifying strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.
  • A detailed review of government policies, including incentives and trade barriers designed to boost local production and reduce import dependency.
  • Extensive secondary research, reviewing existing studies and reports on these industries to contextualize our findings.
  • Qualitative market size assessments, using historical data from official sources, industrial organizations, and other relevant sources to estimate the current and future potential of each industry.

What We Delivered

Our findings outlined specific ways smart glass solutions could address industry challenges and unlock new growth opportunities:
