I once read that about 50% of LinkedIn users visit LinkedIn once a month or more. That means HALF of your connections aren’t even on LinkedIn once a month.
I read somewhere else that if you post a status update on LinkedIn EVERY BUSINESS DAY for a month, you will reach 60% of your first level connections.
Source citations added to the above. (See? I do remember my MBA program training…)
Those of you who know me well know that when I’m asked the same question twice in a week, I blog my response. And this is exactly what led me to create this blog.
I recommend you post a status update once every business day on LinkedIn. Do this effectively and you will:
- Position yourself as a thought leader
- Be top of mind for referrals, when someone in your network needs your service
- Create a regular cadence of information for your network and your profile will become a destination for these insights
- Win the lottery and move to Maui. OK, well maybe this one isn’t true. But I like to think that being effective on LinkedIn is the equivalent of a tropical paradise, fruity drinks and all.
Here are my suggestions for WHAT to post in your status update.
Keep in mind your goal with status updates on LinkedIn is to do MORE TELLING and LESS SELLING to your network.
1. Tell us about conferences, workshops, or other events you have attended. This one is so easy once you get the hang of it. Every time you attend a professional event, make sure you snap a few photos of the presenter, keynote, or even follow attendees. I personally like to stage my photos so the host organization’s banner or logo appears in the photo, but that’s the marketer in me.
WHAT TO SAY:
Today I attended the @(organization name) (event) at (location) in (City, State). If you’re active in the (industry type) industry, I highly recommend checking out their upcoming events. It was great to see @(name of person1 in photo), @(name of person2 in photo), and many others.
I’ll be attending their (event name) next month. Reply below if you plan to attend.
BONUS: Include in the post a few of your key takeaways that you will be applying in your role. Here is an example of a post (status update) where I did this after attending a recent event. https://www.dhirubhai.net/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6417420708388831232
2. When you are reading an online article about your industry, click to share it as a post. This is a great way of multi-tasking. You are learning and sharing at the same time.
It reminds me of school when you would have to summarize a book in one or two sentences. When I share an industry article, I will always include one or two of my key takeaways. This helps ME focus on what I learned and by sharing it with my network, it demonstrates my passion for the subject and my growing expertise.
See an example here: https://www.dhirubhai.net/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6413391719068364800
3. Share news, press release, or even blogs from your company website. Make sure the news is public before doing so, but certainly anything on your company’s public website or even your company’s LinkedIn company page is fair game to be shared.
I always like to include a 1-sentence preview of what the link is pointing to, so my readers know what I’m sharing. I don’t know about you, but I don’t click the link unless I know it will be worth my time.
Here is an example of a blog I've shared: https://www.dhirubhai.net/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6422066637595242496
4. Share business tips. Say you’re an expert in blogging. Share a few tips about what makes an effective blog. Or perhaps you’re an expert in making coffee. I definitely would read those tips. Probably while drinking coffee.
Chances are, you know more than the rest of us about something in your business that will be useful to other LinkedIn members.
I have a friend who is in a senior leadership position who does a lot of travel. She shares travel tips. Brilliant!
5. Tell us how you can help us. Whereas all of the above have been more storytelling than selling, this one is OK to be a direct pitch for your business. Remind your network what you do and who you can help and how you can help them. Don’t rely on your network to remember what you do. That’s your job.
Even better, include a video clip, like I’ve done here. https://youtu.be/1RKaeOKzjco Yes, it was a selfie video and no rehearsal. I just started talking. Guess what? This video led to a few business inquiries for Meller Marketing. And counting...
6. Post a #FridayShout feature of a fellow LinkedIn connection and give them a shout out, as I’ve done here: https://www.dhirubhai.net/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6420962855801102336

PS:
- If every status update you post is from an automated service (buffer, Meet Edgar, etc.) and you never visit LinkedIn to check in on your network, this isn’t going to work. You need to be SOCIAL on LinkedIn and engage with your connections. I personally LOVE buffer, but it's a tool to help me occasionally schedule postings, not a replacement for genuine engagement.
- Then again, if you’ve read this blog all the way to the bottom, you’re obviously a rockstar and want to up your LinkedIn game.
