The ideal marketing kickoff

The image shows one example of a not ideal marketing kickoff and one of an ideal marketing kickoff. In the not ideal marketing kickoff, three people are holding a marketing kickoff meeting. The non-marketer is telling the two marketers, "We need a brochure, petting, zoo, and Super Bowl commercial." The marketers look concerned and anxious. One of them is thinking "S.O.S." In the ideal marketing kickoff example, the same three people are sitting at a table. The non-marketer says, "We're developing new resources with the objective of building thought authority around these trending topics: X, Y, Z. Our goal is to maximize engagement and achieve $X revenue by X date. We have some ideas, but would like your expertise regarding the ideal marketing to support our goals." The two marketers react with smiles and have lightbulbs above their heads to indicate they have ideas they are ready to share.

I drew this many years ago after being asked to document what an ideal "marketing kickoff" should look like. It's a bit silly, but the deal is this—marketers thrive on outcomes. Give your marketing team a vision, an endgame, a destination where you want to be and let them use their skills and expertise to help get you there. Unleash the talents of your marketing team with kickoffs that sound more like this: "This is what we want to accomplish . . . how do you suggest we market to achieve that?"

Success ≠ tasks completed. Success = results achieved.
