Acknowledgments

  • Verifying that the signer personally appeared before the notary.
  • Confirming the identity of the signer.
  • Ensuring the signer willingly signed the document.

Oaths and Affirmations

  • Administering oaths (a solemn promise regarding one's actions or behavior) to an individual.
  • Administering affirmations (a solemn declaration without reference to a supreme being) to an individual.

Jurats

  • Verifying that the signer personally appeared before the notary.
  • Confirming the identity of the signer.
  • Witnessing the signing of the document.
  • Administering an oath or affirmation regarding the truthfulness of the contents of the document.

Copy Certifications

  • Certifying Copies of Original Documents: Certifying that a photocopy is a true copy of an original document that the notary has examined. Notarizing that the copy presented is a true and accurate reproduction of the original document.
  • Document Certification by Custodian: Certifying that the custodian (the individual who holds the original document) attests that the copy is a true and accurate copy of the original document.The custodian must sign a statement, in the presence of the notary, declaring that they are the holder of the original document and that the copy is complete and accurate.

Witnessing Signatures

  • Require the personal appearance of the signer
  • Review the document to determine the type of document and type of notarial act required
  • Identify the signer as the person who is supposed to sign the document
  • Have the signer sign the document as you watch
  • Complete the notarial certificate
