ID2020 Announces RFP for Bangladesh Digital Health ID

The Government of Bangladesh; Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance; and ID2020 are collaborating to implement a digital health ID program aimed at giving infants and children a persistent and portable biometrically-linked digital identity at the time of their first routine immunization.

The ability to prove one’s identity is a fundamental and universal human right.

Yet, globally, one in seven people – more than 1 billion in total – are unable to prove their identity through any recognized means.

The majority of those living without identification are children under the age of fourteen who have not received a birth certificate. As a result, they lack access to basic legal protections and social services, such as education and healthcare, are unable to participate fully as citizens and voters, and are systematically excluded from the modern economy.

While this is a global challenge, it is particularly pressing in Bangladesh, where only 37 percent of children receive a birth certificate during the first five years of life. Despite this, Bangladesh has achieved high immunization coverage against vaccine-preventable diseases with 97 percent of children receiving at least one vaccination.

Taken alone, immunizing children is vitally important. When paired with a persistent and portable digital health ID, the impacts can be magnified through long-term health benefits and greater access to other opportunities and services across the lifespan.

The program partners are seeking organizations interested in supplying an identity services solution.
