Iconic Doors: From New York's Landmark Chelsea Hotel

On April 12, 2018 at Ricco/Maresca Gallery (529 West 20th Street, 3Fl, New York), Guernsey’s will be conducting an unprecedented auction of 55 original doors to residences within the fabled Chelsea Hotel. A substantial portion of the proceeds from this event will be going in support of City Harvest, the non-profit organization that pioneered the concept of food rescue and its distribution to those in need.
For more than a century, the Chelsea Hotel attracted some of the most accomplished personages in the cultural realm. Now undergoing an extensive "face lift," the residential hotel may never again be the setting for the wildest affairs. Memories of the Chelsea Hotel will, however, live on in popular culture.
Though well- worn, white-washed, and plain, the Chelsea Hotel doors are portals to the private spaces of musicians such as Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, Janis Joplin, Jerry García, and Bob Dylan; important authors including Jack Kerouac, Thomas Wolfe, Tennessee Williams, and Mark Twain; trail-blazing artists Jackson Pollock and Andy Warhol, activists such as W. E. DuBois, and actors such as Humphrey Bogart. Through exhaustive research, roughly half of these large wooden doors can be traced to the iconic individuals who lived behind them.
