ICHOM 2023: Top Ten Things I Heard on Day 1

The energy of the ICHOM Community was high on the first official day of ICHOM 2023, Barcelona. With over 600 delegates from 46 countries, this was truly a global conversation. Here are a few things I heard during the discussions today:

  • Be curious (Ted Lasso/Walt Whitman)- what matters to patients? Why are outcomes what they are? How can we change them? How can we get past barriers together?
  • Change the incentives, change the world- regulatory, performance, money.
  • Trust requires transparency, time and a lack of ego. All stakeholders must commit.
  • Data standardization is the goal but start where you are and build. ICHOM is the blueprint to guide you and partnership is the fuel to accelerate.
  • Focus on Outcomes can help us see and act on safety, quality, equity, shared decision making and personalized care and experience simultaneously.
  • Technology can facilitate PROMS- but it requires flexibility - asking questions that make sense to patients, transparency o n use and the why behind asking, and executed at the time and in the best format that meets the patients where they are
  • VBHC is critical to a caring and supportive work environment for health care workers. Open culture, trust and creativity in finding solutions are essential (and a good video production company).
  • Leadership matters- commitment in C-suite, Ministries of Health level and global organizations like ICHOM is critical to scaling change.
  • Who sets the rules and guideposts to ensure AI doesn’t become another commercial determinant of health? Government has a responsibility!
  • It’s best to start with easier wins and work up. But DO something and Learn fast!

I look forward to identifying actions that each of us - as individuals and organizations - can take to speed the use of patient-centered health outcomes as the primary metric for value in healthcare. The results that matter most to the patients must drive our collective work. #ICHOM2023 #measurewhatmatters #patientcenteredoutcomes

Thank you for a fantastic day at ICHOM 2023!! My first ever, but hopefully not the last one. I was inspirered by the Way the conference was put together. A great mix between plenary debates with a tremendously high academic level and sessions with more narrow focusing og specific issues related to PROM/PREM and so on. I Think you managed to balance the speaks in a way that accomodated the clear connection to the “real world”: the clinical setting and the patients within that setting. Thank you being let info “the family” of ICHOM!
