Ice and easy does it - How I got the shot (2mins)

It’s always fascinating to see see behind the scenes of a photo shoot. I for one enjoy seeing how other photographers set-up and operate.

Sets can be as big and complex as a Hollywood blockbuster. They can also be as small as one person with a camera. Any guesses where on that scale I work?

Yup - always towards the one person and camera end. I am comfortable with this, but then if I need lights I can scale up appropriately. Of course, a lot of my work is on location with many moving parts. That could anything from the bar of a hotel to a fully operational airport. Each situation has challenges, but I’ve always found speed and focus on the end result have helped mitigate these.

For this shot, I set up two lights - one on a lighting stand with large soft box to the left of me, one on a smaller stand placed at the end of the bar. My footprint was relatively small so customers at the bar weren’t disrupted (after all, the bar is there to serve them rather than be a play area for me and my creative ideas). We worked hard doing several takes to get the right image. But always stopping if a customer needed help or was curious about what we were doing. On any shoot, I am determined to get the right image but I’m wholly aware that there are more important things going on. If everybody is happy, then I am happy. And that is a good place to be, isn't it?

Great work Nick. Half the battle (more than half) is coming up with the idea in the first place. Very well done.

Brilliant photo Nick!

Cracking shot Nick. Client must have been stoked with that. Funnily enough that kind of shot still scares me..... multiple exposures, things in the air, etc. Now's probably a good time to practice in the kitchen..... whilst nobody is there to see the mess!
