ICA Evidence Requirements - Appraisals
MTCS (UK) Ltd
Competence certification and training for personnel involved in safety-critical activities in the energy sector.
The MTCS Individual Competence Assessment programme requires you to provide Appraisals as evidence to support the information you have provided.
What is an Appraisal?
An appraisal will be part of a company’s internal management system, it is a review of your job performance and overall contribution to the company. An Appraisal normally happens at the worksite after each offshore trip. It’s an opportunity to look at how things have gone for you in your role.
Appraisals can also be called “performance reviews” or “end-of-trip reports”.
Why is it important in the MTCS Individual Competence Assessment (ICA)?
An Appraisal is the primary piece of workplace evidence we ask for. It indicates how well you have been doing your job. MTCS need to know you have been deemed competent by your supervising authority and an unbiased Appraisal is a credible piece of evidence for this.
What information should it include?
An Appraisal is an assessment of performance against agreed standards and objectives. It will hold information of your day-to-day work performance, any learning needs and a plan for your future progression.

An Appraisal normally includes generic criteria in relation to attitudes and behaviour. It will include a scoring matrix, e.g., 1-5 with 5 exceeding expectations for the role.
Your Appraisal should be signed and dated clearly by the appraiser.
An Appraisal, used as part of your evidence for MTCS, should be written in English and should have been conducted within the last 12-18 months.
How many appraisals are needed and why?
We require you to provide at least one Appraisal, but we would prefer two. If you have an Appraisal completed by your witness, you will need to provide a second appraisal completed by a different person.
We would prefer two Appraisals to be uploaded initially to rule out the chance of you uploading only one Appraisal and it being completed by the witness, as this would delay the verification process.
