ICA Evidence Requirements - All about witness statements

Within the MTCS Individual Competence Assessment (ICA), as part of the evidence requirements, we require you to provide a Witness Statement to support the information you have provided. Overtime we have seen the same questions being asked and/or the same mistakes being made, which delays the process of attaining an MTCS Competence Certificate.

What is a Witness Statement?

A witness statement is a signed off summary attesting that the information you have provided MTCS with is correct. This will include where you are employed, what for and for how long.

Why is it important?

A Witness Statement is important because it substantiates the evidence you have provided us and that you are in fact in line with IMCA guidelines when it comes to your ability level.

Who can sign/approve it?

A witness can be your manager, supervisor, superintendent, or a personnel manager from your company or agency.

How many witness statements are needed for an ICA?

We encourage you to obtain as least two separate Witness Statements, possibly one from a shore-based manager and one from an Offshore manager/supervisor. However, the quantity really depends on the date range you are able to provide, if your initial witness statements only cover one job/trip offshore, we may request more.

What happens next?

MTCS, more often than not, will contact your Witness to validate the authenticity of their signature and the information provided on the document.

The Witness cannot be the Appraiser, what is the difference?

A witness is someone who can confirm you have been working in your role, at the level stated and how many days you have been there. A witness may not be technically informed in your role though. For example, an agency manager.

An appraiser is someone who has physically seen your ability to perform your job and they will be an expert in their role. For example, an ROV Manager.
