In the week where a survey found that 7 in 10 musical artists are rightly dissatisfied with streaming music payouts and Richard James Burgess, president of A2IM, saidthe undermonetization of music via streaming”, is the biggest issue facing the indie community, the IC community did what it always does - released ravely-reviewed new music, announced tours, signed great bands and much more.

? Billboard released its Indie Power Players 2024 List and it features IC partners Secretly Distribution, A2IM and AIM.

?? The very first Suicide Squeeze release was a 7″ from?764-Hero, and this week they announced that they’re the new home for the Seattle band’s entire discography, which is now available for the first time on?Bandcamp.

?? Topshelf had some fun, unexpected news this week when Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin…casually strolled into a Wisconsin record shop… asked what was playing on the overhead, and bought the record on the spot. Turned out to be The Window by our beloved Ratboys.

ALBUMS

?? Arrowhawk released Roseway, the new EP from Portland, Oregon songwriter Jeffrey Silverstein, a folk rock record “…with a summer glow, calling to mind the monotone warble of the ghosts of David Berman and Lou Reed while further establishing Silverstein as one of the Pacific Northwest’s most passionate, pensive figures” (Paste Magazine). ?? ZZK released Negra, the new album by Indus, the musical project led by Barranquilla producer óscar Alford. This latest album, “a record born from the earth that belongs to the night”, features collaborations with icons of traditional Colombian music like Nelda Pi?a and Pacho Torres, alongside a host of newer artists like N. Hardem and Tomás Llerena.

?? Captured Tracks artist Becca Mancari contributed a track to the latest compilation from Noise For Now, a non-profit organization that supports abortion rights and benefits independent abortion providers. The comp also features tracks from David Byrne and Devo, Courtney Barnett, the War on Drugs, Big Freedia and more.

?? Carpark released Compassion, the debut album by Venezuelan-born, Indiana-based songwriter Rui Gabriel.

SINGLES

?? Kill Rock Stars released the new single from singer-songwriter Melissa Ferrick, a moving rendition of the Tegan and Sara track Where Does the Good Go.

?? Suicide Squeeze released Empty Rooms,?the new collaborative single between Ohio rock band?Goodmorning Valentine?and singer-songwriter?Jessica Lea Mayfield. It’s a song on “the circuitousness of life on the road for a touring musician” that “radiates?heartbroken beauty”.

?? Merge released the latest from the Carson McHone covers EP Odes (out July 19th), a Ramones-tinged cover of the Conway Twitty track (Lying Here With) Linda on My Mind.

?? H1 Massive released Heavy Crown, the new single from “Rock n Roll Missionary and guitar enthusiastJoey Wit.

REISSUES

?? Kill Rock Stars have reissued That's Not What I Heard, the debut record from The Gossip, as well as their breakthrough dance-punk album?Standing in the Way of Control.

?? Suicide Squeeze have re-pressed 500 copies of the Holy Wave LP Relax on surge green vinyl to celebrate its 10th anniversary.

PRE-ORDERS

?? Merge announced that they’re releasing a six-song collaboration between Mackenzie Scott of Torres and Eric D. Johnson of Fruit Bats called A Decorationon August 9th. In the meantime, check out single from it, Married for Love.

?? Merge also announced the sophomore record from London’s Jade Hairpin, a duo made up of Jonah Falco and Mike Haliechuk (Fucked Up). It’s called Get Me the Good Stuff and comes out September 13th! Lead single Drifting Superstition, “a glam and disco-saturated track that is as self-deprecating as it is anthemic” is out now.

?? Kill Rock Stars announced that the debut record from Atlanta, GA-based new wave/punk band Lesibu Grand will come out August 16th. It’s called Triggered and “is a poignant reflection of the myriad challenges and triumphs that shape our lives”. Ahead of that, check out lead single Anarchy, a going-against-the-grain anthem strapped with socio-political commentary on workers’ rights rebellion.

NEW SIGNINGS

?? Father/Daughter announced that they’ve welcomed beloved PNW indie pop band The Softies to their family and are releasing their newest album The Bed I Made on August 23rd! It’s their first new album in 24 years and brought the duo back together “as if no time had passed”.

?? Run For Cover signed legendary emo band Cursive and announced that their new album Devourer will land September 13th. Watch the music video for the first single Up and Away and pre-order the album here.

??? Jeffrey Silverstein (Arrowhawk) talked to Aquarium Drunkard about “the far out, psychedelic swampiness” of his new record, which finds him “…wedding country ballads to funk boogies and laser-guided motorik drive to languid, swamp-ready guitars.

???Blair Howerton, songwriter, vocalist and guitarist of Why Bonnie (Fire Talk) was profiled by Paste ahead of the release of the band’s sophomore LP, Wish on the Bone (out August 30th).
