Dear future scholars,

Trauma and orthopedic surgery of the upper extremity is one of the most exciting aspects in our field of surgery. The hand is our most important tool, and its perfect functioning as part of the upper limb is the goal of every operation. In addition to hand surgery, this also includes surgery of the shoulder and elbow.

At our clinic, this surgery can be experienced up close. Complex operations from the shoulder to the elbow to the fingers are performed in high quality. In addition, we cover the entire spectrum of general trauma surgery in a vibrant city of 1 million inhabitants.

Our team is innovative, inquisitive, and open to international exchange. We look forward to your application and the opportunity to welcome you to Cologne.

The scholar is completely integrated in our clinical expertise. Visits to the Operations rooms with active participation as wells as interesting talks and exchange of experiences during our consultation hours are part of each scholarship. The scholar will be able to experience the clinical expertise of a level 1 trauma center in a city of millions with an internationally renowned specialty of upper extremity surgery.

The scholar will be fully integrated in our clinical routine and experience an inquisitive and open-minded staff with the opportunity to sharpen his surgical profile as well as broaden his scientific horizons.

Introduce your training center and areas of expertise

Our clinic provides 28 beds in addition to an Intensive Care Unit. 2 operating rooms are routinely used. Our staff consists of 48 surgeons.

Upper extremity surgeries are frequently performed each week. Indications for the upper limb include proximal humerus and clavicle fractures, rotator cuff tears, shoulder instability, fractures of the distal humerus, radial head, proximal ulna (Monteggia injuries), stiff elbow, elbow deformities as a trauma sequelae, elbow instability, forearem fractures (Galeazzi), distal radius fractures, hand fractures, SL-lesions and so forth. Reconstruction as well as prosthetic replacement are performed on the shoulder and elbow.

We cover all general traumatology of the upper and lower extremities as well as the pelvis and spine. Minimally invasive procedures and arthroscopic surgery are frequently used to generate the best clinical outcome possible.

Main focus of the clinic is the surgery of the upper extremity from the shoulder to the elbow to the hand.

Shadowing day to day running

Our day starts with morning briefing at 07:30 a.m. Afterwards the scholar has the opportunity on each day to visit the operation rooms and actively assist in surgeries. 2 times a week on Monday and Friday we offer a special consultation for shoulder and elbow pathologies. On Tuesday Prof. Müller shares interesting insights during his special consultation of upper extremity pathologies. Special consultation for the hand is on Thursdays. In addition to our exciting clinical routine our lab is open every day and operative techniques as well as scientific research can be obtained on human cadaveric specimens.

In addition to exciting mentoring and active participation in our daily clinical routine, guided by experienced surgeons, we offer numerous opportunities for further interaction in our clinic.

We offer weekly training sessions and provide an excellent equipped biomechanical lab, which invites to the development of scientific ideas in our creative environment.
