Thoughts on IBM licensing????

Last edition of the IBM newsletter for 2023. I'll be taking a few days to rest after a very busy year end for IBM ?and hence my team.

Over the holidays I take the opportunity to look back on the year. Remember the successes and learn from the failures. What I should do more of and less off.

With that in mind I'd like your help. How could I improve the IBM licensing letter in 2024?

• What do you like and what do you not like in the newsletter?
• Are there topics I should add ?
• Could I improve the layout, more images, less links, etc?

??News and Announcements on IBM licensing

New and announcements from IBM that caught my attention

• IBM have announced ILMT V9.2.34 is now available.? More detail at the top of the What's new page. If you are struggling to maintain BigFix the easier migration to Ansible Lite may interest. Default removal of decommissioned servers after 90 days will help admins. The continued development of the REST API could prove interesting to anyone trying to integrate with a CMDB or SAM Tool.? ServiceNow probably being the big winner here.
• End or quarter/year means Schedule of removing items from the list of subcapacity eligible technologies.? RHEL 6, IBM i7.2, AIX 7.1 Win 2012 and 2012 R2 are no longer eligible. A little xmas humour on the topic
• You can now get zSeries contract details on the IBM Licensing portal on the page zSW Licensing.?
• If you have an interest in zSeries there's the IBM Z Software Pricing Reference Guide as well as the an overview of VUEs each Value Unit (VU) priced product has an applicable VUE.?

What I've been reading, listening or watching ?? ????

• A good article from the FinOps Foundation:? IBM Cloud Licensing Management Guide.? I like their 12 step approach but I think they may be over optimistic on how long it takes to do a compliance check, 1 week ??
• Good post from Mark Thaver on Demystifying IBM Cloud Pak and premier on Cloud PAK Licensing in 2023.? Lots of detail!
• A very detailed post from Rowan O'Donough on The Myths around IBM Third Party Software Maintenance.? It's worth a read just to understand the options that are available for IBM S&S
• I must admit I have limited knowledge of the IBM i platform but this post from EasySam seemed worthy of inclusion.? Why Big Blue is simplifying the IBM i LPP stack
• Did you know there's 3rd party support for IBM mainframe? Neither did I until a recent chat with Lee Bailey from Top Gun Tech. If you are near the end of your current IBM support agreement you should check out there hardware support option.
• Some really interesting articles in this months Mainframerz Meetup newsletter. "Looking forward to 2024". from Andy McCardless
• CIO.com had this article on future of mainframe The hybrid approach: Get the best of both mainframe and cloud by Milan Shetti, CEO Rocket Software.
• The Kyndryl 2023 State of Mainframe Modernization Research Report was just published. Considering Kyndryl still manage the mainframe for more than 700 clients globally this is worth a read.
