IBM designs for Aeroflot a digital portal to streamline information services for the flight crews

IBM announced today it designed for Aeroflot an innovative digital portal to be used by the flight crews. The new portal is aimed at streamlining the information services provided to the pilots and will become their main day-to-day application accessible from any mobile or desktop devices. The pilots will benefit from its speed, ergonomics and functionality, while for Aeroflot the project may become an essential part of the digital transformation of the flight documentation workflow.

The new digital portal, designed by IBM Services, is a single-entry point for most of the pilot's interactions with the various services and IT systems of Aeroflot. This portal allows to collect and access the required information before the flight, such as flight documentation, data, statistics and reports. It also lets the pilots interact with Aeroflot departments in dialogue mode through requests and confirmations on them. After the flight, used together with the onboard applications, the portal helps to automate the process of uploading the required data and reports.

From the user interface side, the development priorities were to achieve good ergonomics of the portal and its usability as well as the required features, including a notification system. The portal may be accessed from any mobile or desktop devices running on diverse operating systems.

“The new digital portal will allow Aeroflot to simplify the business processes for working with flight documentation and the engagement of the pilots with the airline’s information services, increase the satisfaction of the flight crew, and, ultimately, save on time and money,” said Kirill Bogdanov, Deputy CEO for IT at Aeroflot.

The project team from IBM Services aimed at achieving high availability and reliability of the developed application from a technical point of view, as well as its scalability. Open-source software was used to ensure the required features across the hybrid on-premise and cloud IT environment of Aeroflot. Microservice architecture will make it easier to enhance the product by supplementing it with new functionality and improving the user experience.

“Operations management is an important element in digital transformation of the workflow. With help from IBM, Aeroflot has made a major step in using IT to accelerate operational excellence and laid a foundation for further improvements of the processes, aimed at helping the airline to achieve its strategic targets,” said Evgeny Sokolov, Partner, IBM Services, Central and Eastern Europe.
