IB Insider #4 - April 2023

April is normally a quiet month at Imperial, with students enjoying a well-deserved Spring break, but in truth Imperial never sleeps!

Being part of Imperial College London, a top 10 world university and leader in STEM, means there is always a scientific discovery, launch, or breakthrough just around the corner. This month JUICE (Juicy Icy Moons Explorer) launched to assess the habitability of Jupiter’s moons carrying Imperial-led technology. It’s pretty cool to be part of an institution that is actively part of the European Space Agency’s flagship mission. ??

Taking that technology theme back to the Business School, our students took part in a free community programme: What The Tech!? , which aims to help older people feel more connected to others by increasing their confidence in using modern technology. Our students work with Imperial’s community engagement team to help local over-50s in the White City area feel confident using smartphones and laptops. Launched in 2017 the scheme now brings 30 people together with 25 Business School student volunteers.

White City also saw the Business School host the inaugural Innovation and Growth Conference which brought together senior figures from across academia, business, and government to discuss how to increase UK growth and competitiveness in three key UK sectors: Biopharmaceuticals, MedTech and Telecommunications.

Our students achieved some great highs this month. Komal Bapna was recognised by Poets & Quants as one of the Best & Brightest MBA students, whilst 100 of her peers visited Rio De Janeiro for their Global Experience Week , including a visit to Christ the Redeemer. Equally dizzying, MBA student Jack Blyzinskyj is part of a team taking on one of the most challenging open-water swims, swimming across the 33km English Channel, to raise funds to help those displaced by the war in Ukraine. You can find out more about the swim and the team here: https://www.meterbymeter.co.uk/team

This month we sadly announced that Dean Francisco Veloso will be stepping down from Imperial College Business School at the end of August to take up the position of Dean of INSEAD. During his tenure, Dean Veloso led the School through significant growth, development, and impact, bringing together our community in some of the most challenging times. Whilst he will be enormously missed, we are proud of his appointment and are pleased to have Professor Franklin Allen appointed as Interim Dean; a leading British Economist, Professor of Finance and Economics, and Executive Director of the Bevan Howard Centre .

And finally for this month, we launched our annual magazine with thought leadership on:

It also features Melvin P. , an MSc Innovation, Entrepreneurship & Management alumnus who founded Empirics Media Group and was recognised on the Forbes 30 under 30 list .

Finally, who says graduation can’t be fun?: check out the twist in our graduation guidance video .
