IB Insider #3 - March 2023
Aram Karakashian
Executive Director at Imperial College Business School | EMBA2026 Student @ Imperial
This month’s IB Insider comes as we bring a close to the Spring term. For many of our MSc students, the end of the Spring term brings the opportunity to take part in a Global Immersion. Last week, we had students visiting?New York,?Singapore?and?Dubai.?These trips provide an opportunity to experience first-hand the social and cultural dynamics of business in another city. To get an insight, I’d recommend a deep dive read of?previous immersions to Dubai, Hong Kong, and New York .
In March we celebrated?International Women’s Day?with our?Women at Imperial Week ?– an annual opportunity to shine a light on the achievements of women working and studying at Imperial. Our students had the opportunity to have breakfast with our Advisory Board, attend workshops on women’s health, and hear from award-winning director Lucy Blakstad .
Current Strategic Marketing student, Divita Jain ?spoke to women in our community ?about the biggest challenges they face in their industry and how we can embrace gender equity. Two of our recent graduates, Rima Suppan and Morgan Mixon were featured in the Forbes article?10 Inspiring Founders of Startups Focused on Women . Read more about?their journey and company Peachies .
Speaking of student ventures, our?student-led podcasts?have been covering a range of subjects from technology to business analytics to climate change.?IB Green Minds ?speaks to leaders working to combat climate change and interviews climate-focused scientists, entrepreneurs, and investors. This month they released?Episode 16 ?where they spoke with Professor Eduardo B. Andrade , Professor of Marketing and Academic Co-Director of the MSc Climate Change, Management and Finance about sustainable consumption. Do?have a listen and explore the back catalogue .
Sometimes the most interesting parts of Imperial College Business School are the smaller more intimate activities. Celia Moore , Professor of Organisational Behaviour and Director for the Centre for Responsible Leadership?hosted a book club discussion ?as part of the year-long leadership development class she runs on the Full-Time MBA.
Pedro Oliveira , FTMBA student, shares his takeaways: “It was an excellent opportunity to discuss how reading fiction can help us excel in Business and in our future careers. We discussed how it can help us develop our critical thinking skills, our ability to understand different perspectives, and our empathy for others. The conversation was a great learning experience and an opportunity to learn something very different than traditional business school classes. Finally, it was also a good opportunity to relax in the middle of all the assignments."
The end of the Spring term brings an opportunity for students to pause and recharge before their final term. Many will head home, visit family, or travel to Europe whilst others will take internships or work on start-up projects. The next steps in their careers are just around the corner!
Bonus: Listen ?to Business Analytics alumni Miranda Zachopoulou 's journey to becoming a data scientist at?NEWNOW Group?– a technology company developing AI-powered decision solutions for business.
